NETGEAR® Provides Reliable IT Infrastructure for Public Library System

Five years ago, Dan purchased six NETGEAR® ProSafe® FSM750 and FSM726 fully managed switches to manage the traffic from the 50 publicly-accessible terminals located in the main branch, separately from the staff computers. Dan was so pleased with the results that within the next year he purchased four more switches to handle the traffic from the 60 additional computers located throughout the 10 branches. Dan is happy to report that in the entire five years of operation, all 10 switches have performed flawlessly.
Then last year, the Santa Cruz Public Libraries began to migrate their network to a Linux solution, and required a file server for the staff network that would perform effectively in a Linux environment, yet continue to support the Windows clients. Additionally, an aging security appliance and the increasing need for robust reporting necessitated the purchase of a new gateway security solution.
With the library system’s unique needs, coupled with a limited budget and the requirement for each component of the IT infrastructure to work together seamlessly, Dan turned to NETGEAR for the solution.
Global Technology Leader Protects Business-Critical Data with ReadyNAS®

The NETGEAR storage environment supports more than 200 servers and 600 end user systems in 25 locations throughout the world. The company’s Global IT group manages a robust storage environment that includes two enterprise-class storage servers that are responsible for the primary storage of the company’s file shares, as well as running Symantec Enterprise Vault and Windows Essential Business Server (EBS).
Overall, the team is satisfied with the performance of their storage environment. However, growing storage needs and the call for change from senior management prompted the team to begin looking for areas where they could get more out of their limited resources, without depleting their limited IT budget.
The team realized that their enterprise-class storage was a remarkably expensive method for file serving, so they decided to migrate the file serving load to a less expensive system. This way, they could make better use of their investment in the enterprise-class servers by employing them for VMware applications and other business-critical tasks.

Well-Known Clothing/Apparel Retailer Protect Business-Critical Data with NETGEAR

Nearly a year ago, Matt purchased a NETGEAR® ReadyNAS® Pro 6TB desktop storage system for the company’s Lexington, KY headquarters to manage the shared storage for 35 end user systems and provide backup for the critical data on 10 servers. The ReadyNAS Pro replaced an aging PC server that provided only minimal data protection. With full RAID 6 capabilities, Matt quickly came to rely on the NETGEAR ReadyNAS Pro for all critical business operations. A few months later, he purchased a 2TB NETGEAR ReadyNAS 1100 rackmount storage system to use as a replication target in an offsite data center in Cincinnati, OH.
Matt was pleased with the performance of his two NETGEAR ReadyNAS servers, but he knew that J. Peterman was still not completely prepared, should a catastrophic failure occur. The company had 11 VMware sessions running on a home-grown iSCSI SAN, with no backup storage, should the SAN fail. Concerned about this unacceptable level of risk, Matt began looking for a solution that would meet J. Peterman’s needs, while fitting within its budget constraints.

The Zhabei Education Commission is the regional school district in the city of Shanghai in China. The district creates rich media content and makes it available to its classrooms via the network, making an advanced network infrastructure a critical requirement for the successful access and delivery of educational content at the classroom level. Although all of the district’s schools share resources over the xiao-xiao-tong wide area network, the existing system required schools to store documents, class-ware, and multimedia content on local servers.

Just released – RAIDiator 4.2.9 (x86)
January 25, 2010
NETGEAR is pleased to announce the release of RAIDiator 4.2.9 (x86), an update firmware for the ReadyNAS Pro Business Edition, Pro Pioneer, NVX, NVX Pioneer, 2100, and 3200 network attached storage product lines. This release addresses a problem introduced in RAIDiator 4.2.8 that can cause a drive on the ReadyNAS NVX and 2100 platforms to hang, causing a failure condition, and we urge you to apply this update to avoid hitting this condition.
The simplest way to update is to use the System/Update/Remote tab in Frontview. If you prefer, you can choose to do a local update by first downloading the new image here: RAIDiator-x86-4.2.9. We recommend that you update your ReadyNAS to this latest RAIDiator release to ensure your ReadyNAS is running with all the latest bug fixes and enhancements.
Please be warned that once you upgrade to 4.2.9, you cannot downgrade back to 4.2.5 or prior releases.
The following are changes since RAIDiator 4.2.8.New features
- Add ReadyDLNA playlist support.
- Updated to ReadyNAS Vault to 2.0.9.
Bug fixes
- Fixed issue where disks on NVX/2100 where disks may be subjected to hang due to increased monitoring.
- Fixed support for Win2K with Active Directory.
- Fixed support Windows 7 where a very large number of files are copied to the ReadyNAS.
- Fixed FTP memory leak.
- Fixed User and Group account table slider in domain mode.
- Fixed javascript error in FrontView.
- Fixed possible Out-of-Memory condition during disk scrubbing.
Limitations
- Starting with 4.2.7, IE 6 is no longer supported. Please update to IE 7 or 8.
- Volume expansion will not work beyond 16 TB. To support 16 TB or greater, you’ll have to factory default with that capacity in place.
- Permission errors of files downloaded from the Internet can occur when accessing home shares over AFP with Snow Leopard. If you encounter this, you can install the add-on Toggle_AFP_SL_Compat_Homes_0.1-x86.bin to avoid this error.
- HP iSCSI initiator is not supported with the default iSCSI initiator. If you wish to use this initiator, you can switch back to the legacy iSCSI target server in RAIDiator 4.2.5 by installing the add-on Toggle_iSCSI_Server_0.2-x86.bin.
- iSCSI targets with colons in their names currently do not work with CHAP authentication.
- Existing iSCSI targets on RN3200 will not be able to expand, next firmware release will resolve this.
- Snapshot resizing has been disabled in the release. We will re-enable this feature in a future update.
- If you have installed super-poussin‘s PHP5GD community add-on, you will need to install the patch here before updating to RAIDiator 4.2.9 and then install the PHP5GD add-on again.
