  1. I inherited a couple ReadyNAS boxes. As a Linux Systems Administrator, I’m a card carrying member of AABB, Admins Against Black Boxes. When I discovered that there were vendor supplied plugins, albeit unsupported, to enable root ssh on the ReadyNAS I was really impressed.

I don’t want to wait on the phone with support when something goes wrong, I want to fix it. Normally with a black box you’re forced to go through support, but now that I can log in and see why things are failing, resolving configuration problems or determining that something is a bug is much more pleasant experience.

After an upgrade I recently found that FTP had stopped working and by logging in I confirmed that there was a problem with the ftp server and PAM that was breaking authentication. Within an hour of posting about this on the community forums, a patch was produced that addressed the issue.

    Great job guys!

  2. Wayne McRae says:

When I first decided I wanted a simple, reasonably priced storage solution I went online and did a lot of reading. I wanted something RAID protected and scalable that could serve as stand alone backup and storage for data and media and that would be future proofed enough so I wouldn’t have to worry about being stuck with obsolete, unsupported equipment. Network Attached Storage, Direct Attached Storage, do it yourself servers and stand alone solutions, I researched them all. Nothing I reviewed was entirely satisfactory, either being horrendously expensive, requiring a degree in Linux to build, or having so many bugs and flaws that it wasn’t worth the effort.

That is until I read about Infrant’s ReadyNAS offerings. After reviewing Tom’s Hardware, the Infrant Forums and what various other people were saying about this spunky little NAS it became obvious that Infrant’s ReadyNAS NV was exactly what I’d been looking for all this time. With the small form factor and sexy case it is both eye-catching enough to display in any media centre or small enough to be hide out of the way, as if you’d really want to. Out of the box the NAS just worked. No fuss, no hassle. And I haven’t had a major problem or failure since I purchased it over a year ago. X Raid is a dream come true (why isn’t this feature standard in RAID??) and the file and media services the ReadyNAS NV offers should please both power and home users alike. 1 ReadyNAS NV, a PS3 or X-Box 360, and you have a complete home media system to serve up your favorite media files right to your TV.

I certainly do not regret purchasing the ReadyNAS NV and in a few years time when my current box fills to capacity I’ll be heading straight to Infrant/Netgear’s website to pick up my next storage box.

  3. Vincent Nadal says:

Very Happy with My 3 readyNas.

The Infrant/Netgear team is responding quickly to problem, trying always to give a solution and take care of our request for improvement, new features …

New firm are coming quickly and are ok

    Good job , Good Team

Thanks for the forum, and the developer network : everything which help us

  4. Kevin Hakarine says:

I purchases a ReadyNAS NV+ over a year ago to store all of my music, data, computer backups, etc. It has performed flawlessly, and has never required a reboot, other than when upgrading firmware. I have a large USB disk connected, and weekly backups scheduled. They perform without a hitch. It streams music to my media center PC without problems, and works well with my UPS. It is all I can ask for in a storage device that I have never touched in a year, other than to vacuum the dust bunnies out of the vent holes. I would not hesitate to buy another one. The only downside I can think of is compatibility with hard disks seems to lean towards Seagate. I have 4 WD GP’s that I would like to use, but will have to wait until they make the list. A minor complaint, though. Nice job!

  5. Tin Eng says:

With megapixels and memory card capacities getting larger, I found myself needing a secure and easy solution to store all of my digital photos. Although printing them out is perhaps the best way to preserve my memories, I cannot print all of the hundreds of pictures I have. I wanted a RAID solution that was scalable and the ReadyNAS NV fit perfectly. Not only did it handle my storage needs, the how-to section of the website taught me how to make it a webserver for my photos. So not only does it store my photos, it helps me share them too.

I am very happy with my ReadyNAS AND the top-notch customer support.

  6. Thom Brooks says:

I bought a ReadyNAS NV+ one year and three months ago after a LOT of research. I needed Mac and PC compatibility, RAID 5, integration with a UPS, and gig-E. Got all of that. A few months ago I was really happy to get the added bonus (in v4) of being able to ssh in and work with file and folder permissions for users and groups from the shell.

Recently, the power supply cooked itself. I had a new power supply two days later and a pre-paid return shipping label. It was easy to replace, and to double-check all of my data.

NetGear made a smart purchase! The hardware warranty on ReadyNAS units bought after August 2007 is now five years. Let’s hope they continue to make good improvements like this to the product, and keep letting the Infrant guys do their thing!

  7. After much research in the NAS market I purchased an NV+ diskless box a couple years ago. I even stopped by Infrant HQ and talked with the techies about the box and X-Raid. The NV+ performed as advertised and with a few questions on the Forum I was up and running in no time. I started with dual 500GB drives, added a 750GB, then another 750GB and all the while the NV+ did its thing in expanding. I recently started swapping out the 500’s and replaced them with 2 TB drives winding up with 2 750’s and 2 TB. Again all the while the Box did its fantastic thing. I tell you I love it!

I did have some problems recently with the latch on the HD cages, sent an email in referencing spare parts; Chirpa responded within minutes and shipped me the parts over night. Now that is SERVICE! And with that kind of service you have happy customers who wind up buying more and more product. I know I will.

Bottom line is I just can’t say enough how much I love this box and the support I’ve received from Infrant (they will always be Infrant to me). Now if we can just get Netgear to draw back some of their post-acquisition price increases and price to market I would be even happier.

Love the Box, Love the Guys!
Stay true to the Infrant Spirit!

    Vaughn

  8. James Wilbourne says:

Purchased a ReadyNAS NV 11/06 for the purpose of Slimserver functions. Things work fine for me. My comment concerns the slight burning smell I noticed just recently. Called support and within 10 minutes I hung up the phone with a new power supply on it’s way at no charge to me. Called on 6/4/08 received new part on 6/6/08. Haven’t installed it yet but am very impressed with Infrant/Netgear owning up to the power supply problem in such an easy and fast manner.

    Thanks
    Jim

  9. Mike L - Indiana says:

My small business purchased a ReadyNAS NV as it’s first workgroup server a few years ago. We liked it so much that we purchased a second one a year later when we expanded to a second location. The benefits of large amounts of storage with X-RAID were very compelling.

With two of these units in separate locations, we run file synchronizations between them every night to replicate our data and provide another level of redundancy.

For the money that we invested in these to machines we feel that the ReadyNAS product is excellent for any small business like ours because the functionality packed in this system is amazing.

  10. Nolan Evans says:

I purchased a ReadyNAS 600 about three years ago to act as a backup target for the PCs in my household and over the years its role has evolved (with the continuing release of new functionality through free firmware updates) to include media server and primary file store. It has functioned flawlessly and until one of the drives failed I had no concerns about the unit at all. Thanks to the RAID 5 configuration this was just an event to deal with and not a total disaster.

Since I had to replace the failed drive I decided to perform a capacity upgrade at the same time, going from 250GB drives to 500GB drives. The upgrade went smoothly and at the end I had a new empty volume the same size as my original. Unfortunately for some reason the original volume lost its RAID protection and I could not get it to resync. I posted a description to the ReadyNAS Forums and the same day one of the moderators contacted me to begin troubleshooting. Within a couple of days the volume was repaired (with no data loss) through remote access.

I would expect this level of support from the enterprise disk array vendors I work with, but to see it for a consumer product that is not under an extended maintenance contract is truly impressive. The team at ReadyNAS has earned a customer for life.

  11. Paul R says:

I purchased my first ReadyNAS Duo two days ago to replace my dead WD NetCenter and I feel like I have been empowered by this fantastic product and support site. I’m now able to do many things with my network that I frankly thought would require a computer science degree to accomplish. Okay…maybe that’s a little melodramatic, but being able to securely access my files through the internet and host my own website is very cool in my book! Please keep up the great work and I hope to be just another statistic in your vast sea of testimonies.

  12. Ivar Hansen says:

What a relief to get my Readnas Duo up and running. If you are considering a NAS for small pro or advanced home use – don’t waste your time like I did – just buy this one. I’ll explain why.
I’m running a small photo bureau, take a lot of pictures and save them as +60Mb TIF, RAW and JPG. My collection is 25.000 images. For half a year I used a NAS from one of the other leading producers, starting with Q. This NAS could not show thumbnails for my TIF files – or when I clicked a catalogue it had to start thumbnail generation from scratch on +100 images – took a day. Or it went down at night when thumbnail generation process ran. Several support inquiries and new firmware did not solve this issue.
Now, I set up my disks in RAID1, and when one disc went down with a couple of bad sectors the whole NAS went down. So I can only warn everyone to NOT trust that RAID1 on “Q” NAS.

Now I’m the happy owner of ReadyNAS with 500Gb mirrored RAID1. I think this device is first of all created to keep data safe and healthy – not to have a BT client and several other stupid features that my PC will do better. That said I’m using my ReadyNAS flawlessly with my Squeezebox. Q could not even do that.
It’s okay that a NAS can do these “nice to have things”, but I don’t want these features to compromise data safety or performance.

The warmest recomendations from my on ReadyNAS Duo.

  13. I’ve built a number of Linux-based servers in the past and administering and monitoring them has continually been a distraction from my real work. I decided that I would purchase a storage system in order to lighten this burden of being a system administrator.

Given the available options on the market, only two products that I found met all of my needs, and I selected the ReadyNAS Pro.

I’ve only had it a few weeks, but I’ve had a great experience so far. I plan on conducting a number of reviews over its lifetime, and the first one is located at http://jpollackphoto.blogspot.com/2008/10/readynas-pro-review-initial-impressions.html .

  14. Ken Purcell says:

I own a web development company and we have many Ready NAS systems, 2 NVs and 2 NV+. We have units in our offices and each partner has one unit at home. I use rsync to push critical data from the office to my house in case of hardware failure or fire etc. Same thing at home, family photos and music gets pushed to a private share on the office units.

My units have performed flawlessly but partner has had a power supply failure and bought a new unit. It was faster than getting a replacement PSU fron Infrant. He moved the drives over to the new unit and rebuilt the volumes without losing a file. Once the replacement came he swapped out the PSU and mounted new drives into the original unit. So far so good.

Our office is on commercial 3 phase power since we are in a semi-industrial area. That has sometimes given us pretty extreme outages and surges. I have my NAS hooked up to an APC 1500KVA UPS which occasionally runs for extended times. One day I let it run for 4 hours before shutting down the NAS. At the power level required the NAS could have stayed online for another 12 hours!

My one complaint so far has is capacity but I see that a higher capacity unit is available.

  15. Jeremy Otten says:

I Am A readynas Beta User. Have an Readynas NV+ and an ReadyNas Pro Business at home.

Combined with Acronis the Readynas was made “THE” Backup solution for our SMB customers!

Readynas is the BOMB! Good / Solid and Reliable. And for the Pro –> Faster then Fast ;-)

  16. Simon Waddington says:

I bought a ReadyNAS NV+ to provide a primary backup for all my work files and to serve video/music/pictures through a PC to an LCD TV. It sits quietly in a cupboard and fulfills both tasks wonderfully. The first power supply died, and Netgear replaced it pronto; the Machine has now run faithfully and without failure for a year with (despite) regular OS updates.

  17. Auri says:

Purchased a ReadyNas duo with 2x1TB HD.
    Great product:
    - good price
    - full of functionalities
    - centralized backup
    - data redundancy
    - usb front backup button (!!!! wwwwooowww)
    - easy to use and configure
    - good performances
    - …..

I’ve only to understand how can I get running an USB epson laser printer, attached on it

Product ery very suggested. Well done Netgear!

  18. Guido Porta says:

I sincerely want to thanks Chirpa who was able, in few minutes, to save all the data saved in my ReadyNAS Pro. I’m really happy to have bought a Netgear product if the support is given by people so kind and expert like him.
Thank you again really really a lot Chirpa and thank you really a lot also to Netgear for this great help and support !!!

  19. Andreas says:

I was first exposed to ReadyNAS at work. While an IT geek myself, I was not in charge of IT at the office. I was interested in the cool little silver box I saw through the window of the datacenter.

I have now had my NV+ for almost 3 years. It has enormously simplified the home networking setup. My wife and I each have a share, so “My Documents/Documents” is the same on every computer. There’s a share for our pictures. And finally a share for all the movies. These are presented using an HTPC on the big TV.

The most impressive thing about the NV+ is that I don’t look at the web interface for months on end. That’s reliability and stability.

  20. Joanne says:

We bought a NAS duo in January. It’s awesome. Workd in sync with my Solo
    (http://www.ioSafe.com/1).

  21. Charlie Case says:

I have been using a ReadyNAS for two years on my home network and a few days ago, the power supply failed. I was happily surprised to find out that my power supply would be replaced at no cost to me. My replacement supply arrived in two days (using the normal ground shipping option) and I am back up and running. Apparantly there was some issues with the power supply in my particular S/N and Netgear stood behind their product. That type of support will not be forgotten.

  22. Matthew says:

I first heard of the ReadyNas NV+ from my cousin. I bought one and set it up using X-RAID with 2×1.5TB disks. By using X-RAID when I install the extra disks I purchased recently the volume will expand without loss of data! This is great.

I like my NV+ so much that I’ve just purchased recently another one to back it up. There is always the possibility of data loss on any RAID system so it’s important to be able to backup data and the ReadyNas makes this is easy with both USB Hard disk support and support for backing up to another device over the network or even the internet if you wish (though this can be more complicated to set up).

One thing that really impresses me with the ReadyNas is the great website readynas.com. There is loads of information: A Comparison Chart to help you pick the right ReadyNas for you, Definitive Guides for all the current ReadyNas Systems, Manuals, a FAQ, Downloads, and a great forum where users can help each other and where the Jedi aka NetGear ReadyNas support team help as well.

Not to mention the regular updates (usually one every few months or so) adding new features and fixing bugs and available for free! New features since I bought my first ReadyNas such as Time Machine support and ReadyNas Remote are great and have been of great use to me. NetGear works really hard to ensure that the user has a great experience and gets value for money.

The NV+ was easy to configure and works great with both my Windows and Mac machines and if I have any configuration problems in the future I can ask on the forum and I’m sure I’ll get a response that will help me out.

I can stream DRM-free music from my ReadyNas (it appears as a shared library in iTunes) and store loads of data.

And finally one of the best features of the lot, some ReadyNas such as the NV+ come with a 5-year warranty which is great for peace of mind!

If you want a NAS that works, provides a good balance between price, features and performance for just a few users or so then the ReadyNas NV+ is a great choice.

If you need more then take a look at other ReadyNas systems such as the NVX and the Pro. If your still unsure which ReadyNas is right for you after reading reviews like mine and other information on the site, post in the Presales forum and wait for the answers to come.

  23. D Calder says:

Ready Nasphotos, doesn’t work on Windows7. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn’t. Too bad. But I LOVE the box!

  24. George Nelson says:

Bought a RaedyNAS Duo and had it up and running in about 15 minutes. Absolutely no problems and easy to use. The only problems I had were with the bundled Shadow NAS backup software. It did my initial backup OK but then keeps reporting device unavailable and subsequent backups have failed. Other than that, I’d fully recommend this product.

  25. As a way to address the Achilles heal of IT (backups of course) I purchased a ReadyNAS NVX Pioneer for a client and populated it with 4 Seagate 1TB 7200.12. At first, I thought everything was going well, but then ZAP!

After a bit of fussing around, I determined that I had a bad HD out of the box (OEM not from Netgear). After replacing the drive and doing a factory reset I was able to successfully create the RAID5 volume I needed and RAIDar showed no issue.

    {insert bonehead moment}

So I call support on Saturday at 1200EST and after registering the ReadyNAS to my client, I was connected to a support agent within 1 minute. After a brief remote session it was determined that I failed to place the /admin in the URL. I was using a stale link as opposed to going through RAIDar our using the correct URL. RTFM

Tech support was quick and let me off with a warning ;P

Maybe I can blame it on watching Star Trek (2009 J.J. Abrams) with my 6 year old son until 2:30 last night (after Mom went to bed – of course).

I love the SPEEEED. It’s soooo fast using NFS, ESXi, and Netgear GS724T. Jumbo Frames are next!

    Peace,

    Aaron

  26. Mike Whitehead says:

I bought a ReadyNAS NVX to act as a common backup location and a way of sharing files between various computers. Got it going very easily without problems and it is now working well. Amazed at how much it can do – and very grateful for the comprehensive comparison chart that enabled me to select the NVX to meet my needs.

I look forward to playing with many of the additional features available as standard and via the community add-ons.

    Mike

  27. unclesam says:

Bought a ReadyNAS duo last week after my home brew + SME Server started failing (developed alzheimers) for some unknown reason.

Love the small form factor and the recovered realestate. All requisite features of a home requirement conveniently packaged via an easy to use interface.

Wonder if and when one will be able to install asterisk onto it for completeness?

Awesome product. Thankyou^8 (read as raised to power infinity)

  28. Olivier says:

I bought a ReadyNAS NV+ there’s a couple of days and it was up to go in a few minutes.
I’m using it at my home office on a gigabyte network with 1 PC Windows 7/32, 1 PC Windows 7/64 permanently connected + 1 Asus laptop and 1 Acer Laptop.
All is going find. Speed is not crazy, had to cut the “jumbo” feature to get a quite reasonnable speed.
But the machine is incredible : looking cool, staying cool!, no much fan noise (acceptable even near from the NAS), some plugins are really well done (as subversion, WebSVN, PHP5, etc..).
I can share my work with my partner, we can use a true SVN server to version our work, my computer has not to be up when my partner want to work (before we used a shared external drive on my PC), using a netgear switch our local network is now a real gigabyte (not limitted to the DSL box 100MB network)..
It’s really a must have for any little company that must product high quality job without spending hours to backup externel USB drive in the fear to lose something.
The ReadnyNAS NV+ is more than a shared device, it is a real computer that can work for you and you can extend to suit your needs.
So, at this times, I’m happy :-)

  29. Andy Yule says:

Has a ReadyNas Duo that developed a problem – I received prompt and helpful email support throughout. Have looked at all the possible issues Netgear decided to RMA the device. I posted it Monday evening and got another back on Wednesday morning – now that is QUICK!!! It’s not often I am so impressed with service that I will look to post a WELL DONE!!

  30. We have a ReadyNas Duo. The ReadyNas Duo work fine but we miss the Active Directory functionality!!! I hope this functionality wil come in the future.

  31. chirpa says:

Mark, the Duo is a home product, Active Directory is not part of that feature set. The business line has AD available.

  32. John says:

Top marks to Netgear for the ReadyNas Ultra 2. It was up and running with minimal fuss, small and quiet enough to live on my desk, and works with my Sonos music system.
Supporting Linux out of the box is a pleasant change, RAIDar installed and runs on my Ubuntu 64 bit system without a problem.
It’s nice to see an active community forum and third party/community add-ons are actively encouraged.

  33. Remco says:

I recently bought ReadyNas Ultra 2 plus and i can safely say that readnas is the best one out there they offer a great low price for it and it works like a charm i havnt had any problems with and it its been running for 3 days now 24/24 …no background sound , no slow downloads , No cpu problems , no problems at all ..

it delievers max performance at a low price

    KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!!

  34. Steve says:

My ReadyNas Ultra 2 failaed after 2 months, turned itself off and would not turn on again, the PSU is fine however. No attempt by technical support to rectify the problem, a common issue perhaps.
You have to pay to return, £20 to do it quickly.
After a week of waiting for Customer Services to contact me,having chaesed twice, my conclusion is that Netgear has no customer service.
My advice is to buy elsewhere my choice would be Synology.

  35. steve says:

Readynas Ultra 2 failed after 2 months.
£20 to RMA, Netgear customer service would not talk to me.
I will never buy Netgear again.

  36. Charles Harbud says:

I purchased the ReadyNas Duo (v1) as the UK vendor promised to supply a free 500GB drive. This did not happen – I was informed after being turned down I needed to cut the box up and send in the label. I did send in all the paperwork and receipts. I got the unit, bought a 500Gb drive and I find I cannot run the Photo application as it is too old to run ReadyNAS Photos II. I am not impressed. Can anyone tell me where I can download ReadyNAS Photos I and the service that goes on the NAS? – or at least, what do I need to share my photos?
    Thanks
