The recent release of OS X version 10.6 (Snow Leopard) for the Mac has introduced a permission problem when copying certain files that have been downloaded from the Internet to the ReadyNAS. Apple added extended attributes to the files, most notably files ending in .dmg, to flag the file as potentially malicious and send an alert when the file is opened. This extended attribute will cause a permission problem when copying the file to the ReadyNAS, and you will see an error such as that below.
The ReadyNAS team is in the process of rectifying the problem, but in the meantime, there is a simple workaround that you can apply. Simply follow the steps below. You will need to do this to each share that will be used to store files downloaded from the Internet.
Please note that this procedure will work only if your ReadyNAS is in User or Domain security mode. If you have a ReadyNAS NV+, 1100, or other ReadyNAS with the Share security option, and you’ll kept it in Share security mode, you will need to switch to User security to see the Advanced AFP options displayed below.
Step 1: Click on the AFP icon of the share in the Share Listing tab in FrontView.
Step 2: Set Advanced AFP Permission option
Scroll down to the Advanced AFP Permission box, select the option, select Disabled for Group and Everyone rights, and click Apply.
Step 3: Remount the share volume.
If the share volume is mounted, you will need to dismount and remount the volume. This can be done by ejecting the volume from the Finder and reconnecting to the share.
Once you’ve done that, you’ll be able to copy your files without the annoying pop-up error.
