As I write this, I’m seeing flashes of light from the corner of my eyes. Nope, no one’s taking pictures of me. I’m sitting writing this in Orlando as lightning strikes outside my hotel room tonight. Third night here, and definitely still not used to this…
Well, you all know I’m a big fan of ReadyNAS Photos II, and those who’ve used it are finding out why. For the most part, a lot of features are just pretty straight-forward to figure out, even with the obvious lack of documentation. However, there are several tips I want to pass on, as they may not be quite as obvious. I’ll start with three tips for this blog, and I’ll continue to pass on more tips in future posts.
Before I start with the tips, please make sure to upgrade to the latest Photos II version 1.0.4 if you haven’t already. To do this is simple — in FrontView, just go to the Add-ons/Installed page, and click Update in the Photos II box. You’ll see something like this as Photos II is being updated.
OK, that was the big tip, before the 3 tips. So here goes…
Tip #1 - Create a separate photographer account for public sharing
Photos II gives you the ability to create multiple photographer accounts. Sure, you can create accounts for your family, friends, and colleagues, but why not create multiple accounts for yourself? If you post photos on public forums and blogs, use a different photographer account to ensure privacy to your personal photos. From that public account, you can get direct URL to that photo simply by clicking on the gear icon on the photo and selecting the desired resolution.

Click on the copy icon on the right next to the desired image size to copy the URL to the clipboard for pasting, and you’ve got something like this:
Tip #2 – Use the new music playlist feature for slideshows
With 1.0.4, we’ve added the ability to use a music playlist for slideshows. What this means is instead of looping on your single song, your slideshow which may be longer than your song can now switch automatically to the next song in your playlist.

Simply drag the songs from the Available Songs list to the Playlist and order the playlist by dragging songs to the desired order. Notice the song and playlist duration that you can use to match up to the slideshow time.
Tip #3 – Enable stats
If you wonder how many guests have viewed your album or photos, there’s a simple way to do that. Click on the Settings/Preference at the top left of the Photos II window, and select the Show Albums/Photos Statistics option in the Statistic tab.

In Album and Photo views, you’ll see the view count at the upper left corner of each image.
