Pro Pioneer memory upgrade, KHX6400D2LLK2/4G

Postby jmalmlund » Mon Jun 18, 2012 7:56 am

For those who want to upgrade memory I can now confirm that Kingston KHX6400D2LLK2/4G (4GB 800MHz DDR2 Non-ECC Low-Latency CL4 DIMM (Kit of 2)) works like a charm (CAS memory timings are 4-5-5-18).

I'm running a virtual machine with Virtual Box as well as transmission bt, plex, Skifta and Cacti server and now everything runs much smoother (eliminated swap usage) so this was a really nice upgrade to me.

Are you running the virtual machine on the NAS? Or just using it as disk image / iSCSI backend? Mind sharing your model number?

There's just one Pro Pioneer that I know of and that's the RNDP600E (that's what I've got anyway).

As for additional software that I run it's all listed in the first post (with additional I mean besides serving as a fileserver for my local network), don't use iSCSI at the moment.

Yes there's only one Pro Pioneer, the RNDP600E-100. It's similar to the Ultra 6 Plus (RNDP600U-200). The Ultra 6 Plus is the follow on to the Pro Pioneer (basically the Pro Pioneer with some relatively minor hardware upgrades but still the same CPU). The Ultra 6 Plus itself has been discontinued now, I think. The Pro 6 (RNDP6000-200) with its faster CPU, 5 year warranty and business features is a great choice if looking for a new unit.

Thanks! Nice to see you complement with a few more model numbers but I just wonder, the Pro 6 (RNDP6000-200) you talk about, that's the "new" disk-less chassis option right?

Yes. You can also purchase the Pro 6 with disks e.g. RNDP6310-200 (3x1TB enterprise disks) or RNDP6310D-200 (3x1TB desktop class drives) if you prefer.

The Pro 6 has a 2.6Ghz CPU which is a nice bump over the 1.8Ghz one found in the Pro Pioneer/Pro Business Edition/Ultra 6 Plus. See CPU Specs of the ReadyNAS. The Pro 6 and Ultra 6 Plus were released around the same time as each other, I think.

Thank you. The memory upgrade seems to be working fine on our Pro Business:

Model: ReadyNAS Pro 6 [X-RAID2]
Serial: ***
Firmware: RAIDiator 4.2.21
Memory: 4096 MB [4-5-5-18 DDR2]

The good thing about the Pro 6 is that it has a CPU with VT-x which is essential if you want to run 64-bit VMs in VirtualBox. This is one of the advantages of the Pro 6 over the first-gen Pro.

Just wanted to say thanks to jmalmlund for providing the successful install. Just received and installed my pair today. Ran two memory tests, and everything seems good so far.

Firmware: RAIDiator 4.2.20
Memory: 4096 MB [4-5-5-18 DDR2]

I'll be running some UPNP->XBOX 360 media streaming that was giving me some stuttering. Hopefully this random guess of an upgrade helps out. If not, I guess I just gave the NAS a little more breathing space.

I would also like to thank Mr. Malmlund for his advice. Ran 5 passes of memtest without problems, and have now been using it for about a month without issues. Significant improvement in performance!

Thanks for your recommendation and success stories. Just ordered these for my Pro Pioneer. Does anyone have any experience with using these memory sticks on the Ultra 6 and Ultra 6 Plus as well?
Thanks!

Modules that work in the Pro Pioneer/Business Edition are highly likely to work in the Ultra 6 Plus (RNDP600U) too. However the Ultra 6 (RNDU6000) hardware is quite different and uses different memory.

:D Thanks mdgm....

I got my two sticks of KHX6400D2LLK2/4G today and thought I'd test them out on the Ultra 6 Plus first. I've never done a memory test before so I didn't know what to expect.

On the Ultra 6 Plus, the memory test took approximately 1 hour and 26 minutes with Prog 100%, Pss 1 and Err 0. I guess "Pss" means number of passes and "Err" means number of errors.

Then I put the two sticks on the Pro Pioneer and the memory test took approximately 1 hour and 44 minutes with Prog 100%, Pss 1 and Err 0. I suppose the time it took me to do these memory tests is about what everyone else is experiencing, right? I didn’t think they would take so long.

Afterwards, I thought I’d see if there was any performance improvement in the Pro Pioneer, so I started a Logitech Media server scan of my 1.15TB of flac files on my Pro Pioneer. I was pleasantly surprised that the scan was cut down to a 1/3 of the time, and this was while I was simultaneously doing a scan of my video files with my Netgear Digital Entertainer Elite EVA9000! I wish I could upgrade the memory on the EVA9000 to see an improvement.

I think I’m sold. I’m ordering another set of KHX6400D2LLK2/4Gs for the Ultra 6 Plus!

Now I’m trying to see what memory upgrade is proven to work for my Ultra 6, but I haven’t seen anything in this forum with a brand/part number. Any recommendations?

Thanks a bunch guys!
