Passed three rounds of the memory test. Full 1GB shows up in the web interface.
Sped up my NV+ a fair bit. 32-35MB/sec during large file copies.

Bought the Patriot PSD1G33316S you linked to at NCIX, installed it in a ReadyNAS NV+ that was failing to take some rsync backups. Problem fixed, rsync is now doing fine.
For the next person googling, I leave this breadcrumb from my cronjob:
my Linux server talking to a ReadyNAS NV+ wrote:rsync: writefd_unbuffered failed to write 4 bytes: phase "unknown": Connection reset by peer
rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at io.c(836)
Fix that ^ with more RAM.
Consistent with randynas' note about DDR chip size, my RAM module had 16 chips on it (8 on each side).
Also I should note that if you plan to do this upgrade and perform the recommended 2 cycles of memory testing, you should budget at least 4 hours downtime for the tests to complete.
Thanks for the help, BikeHelmet, randynas et al.
