X-RAID/iSCSI Pro Business questions

X-RAID/iSCSI Pro Business questions

Postby XSi » Wed Mar 25, 2009 10:37 am

We are looking for the ReadyNAS Pro Business. Can someone confirm the folloiwng?

I understand that if we want to use X-RAID (and get all the features that X-RAID provides) we can have only one Volume (taking over all available disk space).

We need to use iSCSI. So the configuration we are looking is X-RAID2 with iSCSI.

1) How can we alocate disk space for seperate servers to use with iSCSI since X-RAID supports only one big volume?
2) Is it possible to create multiple iSCSI targets with different sizes to be used with different servers if we use X-RAID? I think I have seen some screenshots with the ability to create multiple iSCSI targets but I am not sure if that was with X-RAID or Flex-RAID configuration.
3) How easy would be to expand the size on an iSCSI target if #2 is possible?
4) If #2 is possible, does this means that we will be able to use different formats for the different iSCSI alocated disk space (NTFS, EXT3)?

Thanks for your help

The iSCSI drives appear to be incorporated in the space used by the XRAID array and appear to be virtual disks inside the XRAID array, so:

1. Create the iSCSI drives you want and the space is taken from the XRAID array.
2. Yes, it's possible, and the space is taken from the XRAID array.
3. It's very easy -- you just change the size in Frontview and the space is allocated. Then you'll need to change the size of the partition, either by reformatting or using a partition resizing tool.
4. Yes. You format from a computer using the drive, so several formats are possible. Mine are in HFS to work with my Macs, for example.

1. Yes, just create multiple targets
2. See answer #1
3. Again, answer #1, and yes they can be expanded. Just keep in mind that this does take some time to resize it.
4. Yes, because of answer #1, heh.

The data volume on the ReadyNAS be it x-raid or flex-raid is simply storing the iscsi targets and the number of volumes on the ReadyNAS isn't going to restrict the iscsi targets you're using.
