v6 & v7 Java JRE?

Postby NASNoob » Mon Jun 18, 2012 9:02 am

Perhaps for @Claykin. I have some confusion.
Is there a simple way to know some major difference between Oracle V6u? and Oracle V7u? ?

Yes, I did have trouble with Oracle v7u2 JRE.... Best I can say is that any/all Java-related stuff slowed down...
SO..I went back to v6u31. Java 'speed' returned. Fine.
Now, Java comes and updates me to v6u33............ ?
I would expect an update offer to v7; the current offer...........So, confusion remains.

Yes, I use Win XP sp3, 32-bit. Is this pertinent?

No, I do not see any trouble with RAIDar v4.3.4. It is very solid.
Thank you,
Duncan

If you want to read the release notes for "Java 6" see here. For "Java 7" see here.

Oracle has also posted some basic details of what "Java 7" has to offer. http://www.java.com/en/download/faq/why_upgrade.xml. You can find lots more here.

RAIDar uses it own Java installed in the \Program Files\Netgear Readynas\jre folder. This version is only updated when Netgear pushes out an update to RAIDar.

I have been renaming the \jre folder to \jre_old. I then create a new \jre folder and copy the contents of the \Program Files\Java\jre7 folder and paste into the empty \jre folder I created. So far its worked for me, but I haven't yet copied the latest Java 7 update 5.

claykin,
Thank you for the update opinion of Java. It will take time to scan/read your links, but, I will in short order. Certainly, I wish not to become a Java expert, but would like to understand it enough just because RAIDar uses it, and, I depend on RAIDar.

For what it is worth, ATM, I have allowed 2 clients to update to v6upd33. Then, I washed 2 other clients and installed v7upd05. All clients run RAIDar 4.3.4.

I will further study your personal workaround. Thanks for the crisp description! Now I get it! Nice to know someone is keeping an eye on this background helper app.

I will share here should I see any quibble with the Oracle Java v7upd05.
Thank you,
Duncan

@claykin,
It has been some time. I did perform your RAIDar Java upgrade. It did work so well! Thank you for this tweak.
Now I notice a continuing problem. My RAIDar program directory is now getting populated with /jre_xxx/ folders.

May I delete the 'older' jre version folders? They are ~122MB each. I read them as junk.

Just now I have:
jre (v7upd17)
jre_orig (v7upd0?)
jre_old (v7upd15)
I believe I will get the Java version of the 'jre_orig' back if/when I have to reinstall RAIDar v4.3.4; followed by your tweak to the current Java version I may be using on my PC(s). Just now I use v7upd17.
Thank you,
Duncan
