Compatibility issue with Acronis True Image Home 2009

Postby markg » Tue Oct 28, 2008 10:57 am

i have been backing up my local computers to the readynas nv+ for almost a year now, pulling the data from the "my documents" files using frontview (version 4.1.1) [for those database files that dont run nicely on a nas]

all has been working fine, but...it stopped on one computer a few days ago; the log said

Backup failed. Tue Oct 28 09:41:04 PDT 2008.

Reason for failure:
Unable to access remote path //M2N32-SLI/My Documents.

since it was only one computer, it couldnt be the readynas; then i remembered i installed acronis true image home 2009 about then. i had been searching for a good program to pull the entire image off the various computers in case of a virus/disk crash/etc. And this one was rated well and seemed to work fine. i even used the program to restore something across the network from the nas, and that worked as well.

but now it seems it was the culprit; i deinstalled, and everything was right again. [using frontview/backup/test interface; fails with it installed, passes with it uninstalled]

this doesnt make sense, and it may be some interaction with the frontview backup, but....fyi.

[edit] i just remembered, i had the same problem with norton 360 v2 about 6 months ago.

Could be a firewall setting. I suggest that you let the computer do the backup to the NAS.

There are several good backup solutions for free.
Cobian Backup

firewalls are all turned off on the individual computers; just the firewall to the net, so that isnt it.

and having to install software on each machine isnt a good solution here. i want it to be centrally managed.

so what does acronis do that breaks frontview backup?

My guesses are
  • Changing file permissions
  • Adding something to the network layer that bugs out cifs
  • Changing the archive bit
  • Hostname change

I guess it must be something to do with the network. Have you checked the backup settings in frontview and tested the connection?

you need to re-read my summary above; all those are either covered or non issues

NOTHING was changed except installing, then deinstalling, the program. and my summary stated the connection was checked with frontview; failed with acronis, passed without

I do not have a solution but a question. I understand that you had problems with readynas after installing norton. I have the same problem. I cannot upload music to the nas and i get the same "signal". The network also drops and i have a hard time reconnecting...
what did you do to solve it?

Check if there is a service running on the system related to Acronis. Shuting it down could solve the problem, but it would not be a useful solution in the long run

unfortunately, uninstalling norton was the only solution. but note, my ONLY problem was with FrontView backup, so it sounds like you may have something else going on...

in my case, i figured it was a one shot thing, and life is to short to track everything down.

but now it is also affected by acronis, so there is something worth finding.

note that both of them run background processes, and at least acronis installs a driver for mounting virtual drives

thanks for the link.

in my case, installing the software, with no other changes, breaks it.

deinstalling, with no other changes, fixes it.

im not saying its the software; i AM saying the software is doing something/interfering with something that is causing this.

when it was just norton, i wrote it off as another norton problem. but now i have two programs where the behavior is fully repeatable...so frontview must be relying on something that these programs breaks (at least on my machine)
