5.3.5-T28 - Can't access NV+ v2

Postby Charles R » Sat May 12, 2012 7:24 am

Last night I started a big backup from the NV+ 2v to an attached USB Drive. This morning I couldn't access the NV+ at all and the job should have been still running (lights weren't blinking on the NV+ or USB drive). It would show up via my router (client list) so it wasn't totally dead. However I couldn't access it at all and eventually pulled the plug and it started up fine and I can now access it.

RAIDar couldn't locate it as well. I just checked and my system log is empty and I didn't receive any alerts.

What about the backup job logs in the logs zip file? Do they give any clues as to what the problem might be?

Backup log is empty. The backup status shows cancelled 3:29am. The backup was roughly 1/3 of the way done. The NV+ 2v is brand new so I'm trying to see if it's firmware or should I swap the unit. I just downloaded the logs but I'm not sure what I should look for... brand new to READYNas.

On the Dashboard click Configure, go to System > Info and look at the Logs section. On the left there will be a button saying "Download Logs". Click on this and a zip file containing lots of detailed log files will be downloaded.

What model USB drive is it? What filesystem? Does the USB disk have its own power supply?

It's a USB 3.0 enclosure (Sabrent) with its own power. I have a 2TB drive in it and it's formatted via NTFS. I couldn't format it via the NV+ v2 which is another story.

Well I guess it's 100% firmware related as just to be sure I swapped devices and the second one just did the exact thing same. I guess my USB controller/drive via NTFS isn't supported and it's not handled gracefully. I'd try ext3/4 but since I have the NV+ v2 I can't format the drive via the NAS and I currently don't have any other way. I might try another enclosure and or the USB 2.0 port and see what happens...

Just noticed the NAS display says: Volume C: Life Support

Once I unplugged/plugged everything came up fine.

I'm attempting the same backup via the front USB port now. I do have a question... When transferring data to a attached USB port is the data is being sent over the network versus directly to the USB port? If so, I guess my router could come into play (although with the NV+ v2 saying Life Support I doubt it)... having difficulties transfer that much data (from and to). I did note that when it went offline holding the power button down for 20 seconds it didn't power down. Not sure if it should have or not. Anyway I've love to know which log files to see/check to find out what is actually happening.

I tried a call into support and it was worthless. I spent about 99% of time trying to convince them what model I have... even after giving them the serial number. What colors is your NAS? :) It doesn't have v2 on the back so it isn't... even though it's printed on the front. Then they stated my drive isn't support which it clearly is. Before I got too upset I got smart and simply asked can you analysis why it's going offline and he stated no. Then thanks for your patience I'm hanging up.

What model drive do you have in the NAS?

Saying v2 on the front, running 5.3.x firmware or having the new Dashboard interface would all be sufficient evidence of having a NV+ v2.

It's a Western Digital Caviar Green 3 TB SATA III 64 MB Cache Bare/OEM Desktop Hard Drive - WD30EZRX (on the approved list).

Saying v2 on the front, running 5.3.x firmware or having the new Dashboard interface would all be sufficient evidence of having a NV+ v2.

It states NV+ v2 when it boots, it's printed on the front and displays it in the Dashboard.

Yesterday I plugged the USB drive into the front port and the backup got to 99% or so... much further than using the back USB port. The backup was roughly 860GB. Up to now I have only had the issue when the backup was running although total uptime has been very little (across both units). Once I get everything transferred to the USB drive I'm going to do a factory default and I didn't have any issues originally copying the data from another NAS to the NV+ v2 via my Mac (leaving me to believe the drive is fine).

Update: I finally got everything on the USB drive and did a factory default. Then I began copying the files via my mac from the USB drive (NAS attached - hoping it wouldn't drop) to the NAS. It went fine for 200GB or so. Last night I told it to copy over 500GB or so and at some point the copy simply stopped (no message) on my mac. However I can still access the NAS and start copying again.

I must admit so far I'm not impressed. Previously to purchasing the NV+ v2 I tried the lowly Netgear Stora and D-Link DNS-320 and neither had one issue copying the same data in either direction.

Reflash your Firmware to 5.3.2 it will fix the large file copy problem, I had to do it.
The 5.3.5 version breaks large copies with the wd30ezrx, I can confirm.
Someome said on the boards that 5.3.4 works with no problems, but I have not ran it yet.

I know I have had several Linksys QUAD's and NEVER had any issues with them....
What's worse is that I saw the WD30EZRX on the Approved list as well, but now it is magicly gone.
When I called for support on it the TECH told me I was SOL and I needed to buy ALL NEW Drives if I was to be supported...
I was the one that figured out that my drive worked with older firmware, I asked the tech to let the firmware guys they need to fix the problem
and he told me that if the drive was not on the approved list they will not fix it....

I bought my unit at FRY's and the ONLY 3TB Drives they sell are NOT on the Approved list!

I ended up replacing the drive with another brand and everything worked great. Since I don't want to be frozen in time not updating the firmware isn't a solution.

Yeah but I Have 4 drives, I will have to spend $800.00 to replace all of my drives...

How long before the drive you have now "might" be taken off the list and you have to replace it again?

Heck if I know. :) Yes - I was within my return period so I simply swapped. If you happen to run across a few of my posts you'll see one of if not my biggest issue is with the limited number of drives supported. As you note in a lot of cases the drives will end up costing more than the NAS not to mention in a lot of cases they are becoming extinct.

Happy Days!
Looks like they fixed the large file transfer issue with 5.3.7!
I was able to stream a file while copying three 4.2 gig files with no issues!
then I transfered a 14 gig movie file from the unit and back to it with no problems!
