I am not sure AppleTV really has a large user base. Then again, I don't know at all about it's user base. It just seems it would be a niche market (NAS + AppleTV group).

SETI@home, at least 5 years ago or so when I last used it, was real easy to set up on a server: put a copy of it in different folders, one per CPU core you wanted to use. Even on multi-CPU machines it was best to leave one CPU (or at least one core) free of SETI, else the server responses became sluggish, even with SETI at nice level 19. Then again, maybe they fixed this in the newer version of @home (I stopped before the Folding@home stuff started).

Now DYNDNS registration (configurable) is something that a lot more people might use. The mobile EVDO based WiFi routers I work with have this option, and the code in the firmware for it is super small and should be easy to build for the ReadyNAS.

Honestly, get Boxee for your Apple TV. It seriously takes the Apple TV to a whole new level, and it is free, and simple to install.

Well, since Boxee is free, and simple to install........

The way Apple has setup Apple TV, where you have to get authentication with an iTunes Library......I just haven't seen anyone get around this in the 2 years that Apple TV has been out.

the hole idee of that is NOT mod the AppleTV, for me i found ways around. But i like to sell each AppleTV withe a storage solution from Netgear. So the key is making ATV working out of the box with the NAS. On the NAS side i am just missing the possiblity to send back six (numbers) to the ATV. So i just need one Interface in the frontview that gives me that. So fair i think no need to make a new FireFly server build.

A a Show i talked to a tech person (not netgear) but he claimst that he had it working. he said something like a cookiee or so, that the nas has to send back to the atv. Since atv sees the FireFly Server i think it is not so a Big Thing to make.

The Final Solution cut look like that:
A Mac in the HomeOffice with a Elgato EyeTV Stick, recording (DVB-T/C/S/S2 or Analog TV or Radio) direct to the ReadyNAS (Duo, NV+ or PRO). Elgato TurboStick is providing the conversition automaticliy to H.264 into the FireFly Folder on the NAS. AppleTV is connectet to the NAS and is plaing the TV recordings directly of the NAS.

All Conponents working together out of the Box, just the connection AppleTV - ReadyNAS not. At the moment i have to have the Office Mac running becouse he is the iTunes Server (iTunes folder hosted on the ReadyNAS).

So maybe you get now a better clue why i like to have this "small" feauture with a LARGE effect. So the Office Mac cut be turnd off, saved some energy.

But you see, that is the problem. Apple has some sort of authentication thing going on between iTunes and the Apple TV. So.....you would need a version of FireFly that does this, which I don't see anyone doing anytime soon.

Um, I don't believe this. The last time I checked out fireflymediaserver.org's forums the discussion there was that it was going to be extremely hard to do. And I have not heard anything about it being done.

Look, getting the Apple TV and the NAS to talk without iTunes running is going to be like cracking the DRM on iTunes purchases. Maybe not that hard, but there doesn't seem to be anyone really wanting to do it. If you go the Boxee Patchstick route, it is much much easier. You get access to Hulu from your Apple TV, plus the Apple TV can then find content on NASes without any problem, and even play non-Apple friendly formats like AVIs.

Again, I just don't see anyone modifying FireFly to support the Apple TV when there are a number of solutions for making the Apple TV better than it is. I can't say enough about how much better the Apple TV is with Boxee on it. And since that project supposedly goes public in Jan 09.....

Ok i am going out on a limb since ive not tried this myself thus i use XBMC on my ATV.

BUT to get native supportf rom the Applegui to your movie files and music files wouldnt it be as easy as mount an nfs share to the NAS from the ATV CLI.

I cant see why that wouldnt work.

Except that mounting a NFS share, or any share requires a hacked Apple TV, which is what the original poster did NOT want to do.

Once you "hack" the Apple TV with Boxee, which is really simple (USB flash drive patch thing), you can get it to mount whatever using their graphical interface.

Well, no. Look at what you originally asked. "How to get a Apple TV (no MOD's) to connect to a ReadyNAS?" And some other things as well.

You cannot get a stock, out of the box, Apple TV to connect to a NAS until someone gets around the pairing thing an Apple TV needs. Now, if you Mod it, sure, you could do whatever you want with it. In fact, you could put OS X on it and have it run as a FULL iTunes Server.
