So the key is making ATV working out of the box with the NAS. On the NAS side i am just missing the possiblity to send back six (numbers) to the ATV. So i just need one Interface in the frontview that gives me that. So fair i think no need to make a new FireFly server build.
But you see, that is the problem. Apple has some sort of authentication thing going on between iTunes and the Apple TV. So.....you would need a version of FireFly that does this, which I don't see anyone doing anytime soon.
A a Show i talked to a tech person (not netgear) but he claimst that he had it working. he said something like a cookiee or so, that the nas has to send back to the atv. Since atv sees the FireFly Server i think it is not so a Big Thing to make.
Um, I don't believe this. The last time I checked out fireflymediaserver.org's forums the discussion there was that it was going to be extremely hard to do. And I have not heard anything about it being done.
The Final Solution cut look like that:
A Mac in the HomeOffice with a Elgato EyeTV Stick, recording (DVB-T/C/S/S2 or Analog TV or Radio) direct to the ReadyNAS (Duo, NV+ or PRO). Elgato TurboStick is providing the conversition automaticliy to H.264 into the FireFly Folder on the NAS. AppleTV is connectet to the NAS and is plaing the TV recordings directly of the NAS.
All Conponents working together out of the Box, just the connection AppleTV - ReadyNAS not. At the moment i have to have the Office Mac running becouse he is the iTunes Server (iTunes folder hosted on the ReadyNAS).
So maybe you get now a better clue why i like to have this "small" feauture with a LARGE effect. So the Office Mac cut be turnd off, saved some energy.
Look, getting the Apple TV and the NAS to talk without iTunes running is going to be like cracking the DRM on iTunes purchases. Maybe not that hard, but there doesn't seem to be anyone really wanting to do it. If you go the Boxee Patchstick route, it is much much easier. You get access to Hulu from your Apple TV, plus the Apple TV can then find content on NASes without any problem, and even play non-Apple friendly formats like AVIs.
Again, I just don't see anyone modifying FireFly to support the Apple TV when there are a number of solutions for making the Apple TV better than it is. I can't say enough about how much better the Apple TV is with Boxee on it. And since that project supposedly goes public in Jan 09.....
