What filesystem is on the USB drive? With that small amount of data, if it's EXT2/3, NTFS or FAT32, I'd just hookup the USB drive to the front backup port and then configure a job under Backup in Frontview to backup Volume C to the USB backup disk. You should specify a path on the USB disk, e.g. a folder such as "nasbackup" so that the backup job doesn't overwrite your data already on the USB disk.

You may wish to enable fast USB writes first: http://www.readynas.com/forum/faq.php#How_do_I_improve_write_speeds_of_USB_External_Drive_attached_to_ReadyNAS%3F

NB: A ReadyNas is not an excuse not to have a backup. Fire, theft, multiple disk failures, other hardware failure, floods, user negligence etc. can all result in loss of data.

I submitted for tech support to request rma. Seagate doesn't seem to have a direct route to rma'ing

I didn't see that link before but it still wants a Sea test code. Any idea on that part? I guess I have to plug it in to a pc to get the result.

I guess I could always do" 669CC6A4

I would think the smart test would be satisfactory to get get a code. I haven't had to use this tool so I'm not quite sure what to expect except it saying the same error I've been getting with a code.

Well you could go with no system available to run SeaTools.

SeaTools won't detect the reallocated sectors again (I think) but it would confirm that the disk is failing.

That what I'm wondering if sea tools will see it. I have the backup running right now so I'll see what happens in the morning and run the test. I just right now thinking it says needs a code since it may get returned at my cost if they can't find a defect.

In the email I sent I showed the error I got on my nas so maybe that'll count towards something.

Showing them Reallocated Sector count is usually enough.

RMA's out it failed the first 2 short and long tests and I got a fail code from the log.

I was thinking I had a lower drive size that fits all my data. Would the nas mirror to a 320 from a 1.5 TB and then just put the replacement in when it comes?

*The answer is no. It said it was too small to add to a raid

I've got the backup, I might as well shut the nas off and sync when I get the replacement drive. At least my failing drive is safe from other harms.

You can only put equal size or larger disks in, can't shrink it.

Backups are good :)

I have my new drive and want to get it back up from my backup . What setting do I use to put it back. on the backup there was a volume c on top(step 1) to put to external but the bottom(Step 2) doesn't have a volume c.
