Status RAIDiator 4.1.7?

Postby KennyKentucky » Thu Mar 03, 2011 2:33 am

Hi there,

I still haven't upgraded to the RAIDiator 4.1.7 version and read more and more posts here saying this current release wasn't very stable.
I don't have any problems with my old version besides the not given possibility of the needed hdd upgrade.

I'm at the upper end of free capacity and do everything to keep the rest of the disk space free, but I also don't want do upgrade to a buggy firmware.

Could this thread be used to collect all the known bugs about 4.17 (maybe including links to separate discussion threads here)?

I really hope, the ReadyNAS team will fix the issues soon!

I held off for 3 months just in case, then went ahead and installed v4.1.7 in my nearly 5 year old NV. I have had no problems at all (using Windows 7 and Ubuntu mainly, and also a couple of machines still on Vista as yet).

I've since installed SqueezeCenter v7.5 (I see 7.54 is now available: http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nightly/?ver=7.5 ; good updating instructions here: http://logitech-en-amr.custhelp.com/app ... a_id/12125. I find that the system is more responsive, but this may be in part to new firmware for my Logitech players too.

My biggest concern now, having upgraded my drives a few months ago to 1.5Tb Samsungs, is that a USB2.0 port just doesn't cut it for backup any more and rsync performance is no solution. I am unhappy with the lack of USB3.0 in the 4 drive Ultra and I will NOT buy two and sync them nor will I pay for cloud backup I don't want (I do use Amazon S3 directly elsewhere).

When my unit hits 5 years in July I'll see what's on offer. I could see moving my drives to a QNAP box, maybe*. But getting the NV to take a USB3 PCI board would be very nice hack indeed. I really do like making things last a long time, especially things that are supposed to be reliable and long lasting, even if they're no longer frontline tools.

*or maybe a Linux box running ZFS.

I doubt somehow hacking the NV to take a USB3 board (if even possible) is going to help your backup performance. You could get an Ultra and backup the Ultra to the NV.

NB: A ReadyNas is not an excuse not to have a backup. Fire, theft, multiple disk failures, other hardware failure, floods, user negligence etc. can all result in loss of data.

^^ guys, this is quite off topic ;)
'No USB3 support' isn't a 4.17 firmware bug as far as I know.
Changing to an Ultra or a QNAP truely helps, but rather under use of bucks than updated code ;o)

So back2topic:
Because of which problem facts some users write of 'unstable' 4.17 firmware here?
Which systems do you guys have (hardware specs/OS/...)?

I'm sure if there are some general bugs in that firmware, the ReadyNAS team will work on a mini update/hot fix immediately.

The topic was the status of v4.1.7, not bugfixes for v4.1.7.

I reported an absence of problems having installed it.

Taking the topic further to refer to the prospect of any future upgrades or developments that would prolong the life of my NV system, which could include USB3 support via the PCI slot, is not a major deviation IMHO. Linux does this already so it's really not some outlandish idea. The ReadyNAS was sold as system that one could upgrade. I have maxed out the memory, replaced the power supply (so I have a spare), increased the drive capacity almost to the maximum, upgraded the firmware several times, used plugins...

Bottom line: I'm interested in more than end of the line bugfixes.

Whether v4.1.7x will be the last release or whether there will be a v4.1.8 is absolutely relevant.

^^ Ok, maybe I didn't choose the headline text well...
Thank you for your report about v1.47.
Since I also upgraded my NV+ to 1GB RAM and still want to do the 8TB storage upgrade I would also be more than pleased if there were more future updates than none or just some hot fixes.

I just wanted to know in how far 4.17 is stable now (you told me twice, but none of the guys complaining answered here yet).
As some wrote: The Duo is still shipping, so further firmware updates should be a clear thing in my opinion. Hope the ReadyNAS team does so...
(I for myself won't do an USB3 mod because I only use the network connection)

I'm using a Duo with 4.1.7 - and I do suffer from the problems described in the thread 4.1.7 Slow To Respond To SMB Network Discovery....
But at least the workaround (toggle CIFS (off and on, again)) is working for me - and since I'm not rebooting my Duo so often, it's an acceptable intermediate solution. Of course, I'm interested in a proper bugfix. So, I've filed a bug report - but up to now there's no solution proposed.

I'm also interested in receiving new features for ReadyNAS Duo - and not a dead-end product.
But USB3 is also not my major concern. I'm only using one USB port for my printer.

Hi KennyKentucky,

I started the bug thread that WSJ referenced. I don't see the need to replicate posts across the forum. Also, given that 4.1.7 is a production release I didn't think it appropriate to discuss its problems in an area reserved for beta releases.

(For the record, the bug still exists and has had no response from Netgear.)

Ian.

Hello

Just to say that I have no problem (cifs) here with a fresh install of 4.1.7 on a Duo.

Hi WSJ,

There has been a nibble from Chirpa in the other thread.

All,
Im running 4.1.7 on a NV+ with 4 Green 2Tb drives. previously running OS X Snow Leopard. Running Strong!
I just upgraded to the Gm Lion release. And Time machine no longer works.
All else is fine.
So if you planning on upgrading to Lion and have 4.1.7 and rely on Time machine "Don't do it yet"
For what its worth!
