performance with WDC WD15EARS-00Z5B1

Hello

i have 4 of these WDC WD15EARS-00Z5B1 1,5TB disks fitted in it.

at the first times use they were working very fine, with good speeds..

lately after the factory default restore due to the problems got with the installation of the plugins, i noticed that the speed of the transfer were incredibly slow.

i cannot get more than 25Mb per sec with any method (ftp, afp, smb).

there are documented issues with these drives?
no errors on the smart report of the disks, no errors on packet transmissions, jumbo frames are activated, all my gear is NETGEAR rig READYNAS PRO - GS108GE switch also tried with a GS108T with no difference.

i am suspecting that all the annoyances are produced by the drives that the vendor fitted in it.

Let me get this straight. The reseller sold you the NAS with those drives in it? imo they are very poor. Any reseller worth buying from should fit drives from the HCL if they are going to fit any drives at all.

Since your drives are not on the compatibility list they could well be the issue.

Have you been noticing ATA errors or a Load Cycle Count increasing rapidly?

it's clear now that are the disks.

i have not looked at the HCL until now.. and looking around the web, seems that those drives have strange problems often with other nas appliances and some OS like win7 and vista.

i think that i have to ask a drive replacement to the vendor that sold me the ReadyNas Pro Business edition.

Yes, the reseller sold me the unit with these drives.

The Load Cycle Count on those disks is unacceptably high. They are incompatible.

I have written to their email support complaining about it.

If they don't reply satisfactorily then tell them that if they don't replace the disks you'll report them to NetGear. NetGear won't be happy to find a reseller selling incompatible disks in a ReadyNas. You should advise the reseller that they should stick to selling disks from the compatibility list.

You can ring technical support (see link in my sig) if you like and mention the reseller sold you incompatible disks and that you've had problems as a result.

I was thinking about getting these drives. I see the 2TB is compatible but didn't see anything about the 1.5. So is it confirmed that these are incompatible?

defitely, after my experience i will not suggest these drives to anyone for use in a Nas.

those discs are intended for use on regular Personal Computers.

just take a look at the HCL as mentioned by mdgm, and go safe.

at this time.. no reply from the reseller.

i'll wait another 48 hours, after that i'll see how to resolve this with Netgear help.

OK finally, after tons of mailing, they replied, and aknowleged the problem and accepted my request to change the HDDs with an HCL compliant type of the same size (actually the only one in the list, the Barracuda 1,5TB model).

Hope this finishes my odyssey with these troubles and i can finally be so proud of this Nas

I have these drives as well in my ready nas. So far smart is saying things are okay but what does Load Cycle Count 45568 say? Is that high or okay or should I buy other ones as soon as possible? I cannot seem to find what is acceptable as Load cycle count.

And what happens when its too high? Will my data be in danger? I know I should backup important data and lay it offsite and I have, but I cannot backup everything.

If this is a serious issue I'll be buying new disks this eve and problably the 1500GB Seagate Barracuda LP ST31500541AS. At the time I bought these 1.5 gig of western digital the seagates weren't on the hardware compatability list yet.

I have the 1TB EAR drive and will be sending them back to get something else. To be honest the 2TB version of the WD drive loos like the bast bang for the buck but right now I don't feel very confident on them.

I ended up dropping my space goal to 750 Gb western digital WD7502ABYS drives from the approved list.

The caviar greens are out in my books - including the 2Tb version. Seagates have horrendous reputation for reliability and Hitachi drive on the list are very very pricey. Oh well - maybe by the time I need massive space extension the drive prices and compatibilities have resolved. Doubt it though - DUO is older machine and the HCL list seems to get updated rather slowly.
