NV+ MacBookPro Direct Connection Speed Help Needed!

Postby brooksoid » Thu May 17, 2012 6:43 am

Hi all,

It's taking over 8 minutes to copy 1GB to my ReadyNas NV+ over a direct wired connection to my macbook pro, no routers or switches. I'm on the latest firmware.

Looks to me like I'm WAY behind what I should be getting, for example: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=26902

WRITE 1.07 GB Mac -> NAS 8m.22s (502s) : 2.13 MB/s
READ 1.07 GB NAS -> Mac 1m.43s (103s) : 10.38 MB/s

I also tested with journalling disabled (everything in performance checked other than Enable fast CIFS writes)

WRITE 1.07 GB Mac -> NAS 6m06s (366s) : 2.92 MB/s
READ 1.07 GB NAS -> Mac 1m.18s (78s) : 13.71 MB/s

Even at worst, the benchmarks on the linked page don't drop below 9 MB/s for write, and 34MB/s for read. And that's with a bunch of network in the middle.

Desperate for advice. I will try some MTU stuff next. I also tried changing net.inet.tcp.delayed_ack=0, which it now is, didn't make any difference to timings.

Cheers,

Matt

Try going to firmware 4.1.7 or one of the Beta one like 4.1.9(t2)

Try not using Jumbo Frames and make sure that both your MTU and the NAS is at 1500.

Did you enable "optimize for MAC"? Disable full journaling?

Thanks Valkyrie... I've just run through all the combinations I could think of and yes, it was Jumbo Frames that was killing it.

With a direct connection and my Mac MTU set to 7936 I can get it working! However, with the router in the chain, the MTU is limited to 1500, so until I replace the router, jumbo frames will remain turned off.

I'm still only hitting 20MB/s write speeds with my direct connection though...

Also, once the router is back in the chain, the slow transfer speed problem returns, just as if the jumbo frames were turned back on.

What router?

Also, did you look at the network stats on the NV+?
