ReadyNAS Duo Performance

Postby Starnzy » Mon Jul 16, 2012 4:42 am

I have a ReadyNAS Duo with 2 x 2TB Seagate SV35 7200RPM drives, currently configured in FlexRAID0 (combined approx 3.6tb storage).

Since setting this device up at the weekend, I've not seen any transfer speeds beyond 10mb per second (across my gigabit network) and when copy/pasting a file to itself (not transferring over the network at all) I'm seeing 6mb per second write speed?! Is this normal for this NAS? I get at least double this performance when simply copy/pasting a file from & to my external USB IOMega HDD.

I have disabled Journalling as recommended under the Netgear optimisation articles but this is as good as it's getting for me right now :(

What version of RAIDiator? 4.1.8, I presume?

Try 4.1.7 or the new 4.1.10 beta

Copying data would transfer the file over your network to your PC and back again.

I presume you have the NAS connected to a UPS? It's not recommended to disable journaling if the NAS is not connected to a UPS.

NB: A ReadyNas is not an excuse not to have a backup. Fire, theft, multiple disk failures, other hardware failure, floods, user negligence etc. can all result in loss of data.

It's using RAIDiator 4.1.9 [1.00a043]

I don't have a UPS. OK perhaps I should re-enable that setting.

I will try installing 4.1.10 beta (T3?) and see if that helps.

Are you using Cat5e or newer cables? The cable included with the NAS might not be. Sounds like something on your network is causing 100Mbit speeds.

If you open Frontview does it report a gigabit (1000 Mbit) connection?

I'm using shop-bought Cat6 cables throughout. Frontview is reporting gigabit connection.
What sort of speed would you expect me to get when just creating a duplicate of a large movie file on the same NAS (FlexRAID-0)? Does 6-7mb per second sound too low?
