Are the iTunes songs DRM protected?

iTunes music and video usually are encrypted so that only the purchaser can play them. This is called DRM (digital rights management). You can purchase the iTunes music without DRM now, but I believe there is a somewhat higher cost. BTW, even free iTunes videos are sometimes DRM protected, as they are preserving the right to charge for them later on.

Apple tries to keep a tight grip on their DRM, so third party software (like ReadyDLNA) can't extract the media out of the protected files.

If you aren't sure if your songs are protected, you can try playing the files directly with a third-party player (for instance windows media player, or vlc).
