Twonky v vanilla upnp

Postby sander » Wed Jul 18, 2007 1:55 pm

As discontinued wireless multimedia devices become cheaper I've gotten a couple of these devices and find myself using upnp more, and I'm considering Twonky.
Can anyone recommend or relate their experiences opposite the vanilla upnp server? I guess twonky does a little interpreting as opposed to just browsing the directories, but it's a little unclear.

My main concerns are with video and performance. Specifically I'm interested in browsing divx files and wondering what townky adds opposite browsing directories, also I have a large slimserver database that performs well at the moment, and I'm concerned if Twonky's a pig I'll stick to browsing the directories.

TIA

I have used Twonky with a GoVideo for nearly 2 years now on an X6. With this said, it has been quite a while since I have tried the generic upnp service. The main difference at the time I converted was Twonky had:

-customizable menus
-customizable music/photo/video directories that allowed exclusions
-it read the tags out of the music files/not just the file name
-was much more compatible with my GoVideo than the generic server (less crashes of the GoVideo, never the server)
-searched the entire music/photo/video database extremely quick. (to this day I do not understand how it searches the files so quickly)

My content looks like this, and it has never struggled. All the music is 320kbs, and has never been a problem.
Content
Music tracks: 12316
Pictures: 9262
Videos: 666
Radio stations: 0

I think for the money, and the great support Infrant has given to support the software, there is no reason not to spend the little bit extra for Twonky.

Hope this helps.

Thanks that did help. I also noticed that Twonky has memory usage information on its interface so I can keep an eye on how well it's doing.

That said it's wierd, but my new Buffalo LinkTheater DVD can browse fine, but can't read anything with Twonky 4.4. Don't know what it is, but I posted on their forums and we'll see where that goes.

Out of curiosity, did you try the streaming media server? All these servers and their respective devices are pretty cryptic if not outright lacking in any information on how they work.

The streaming media server does not work with the GoVideo, so I have not tried it.
