ReadyNAS NV+ and Helios X5000 can't play FLAC files

Postby lordbowl » Sun Sep 02, 2007 5:51 am

Hi,

I have a ReadyNAS NV+ attached to a Helios X5000 via a wired network. I can play mp3 & WAV files stored on the media share of the NAS, but I can't play FLAC files.

I don't intend to have a PC running on the network.

After not being able to play FLAC files with no PC on the network, I tried to use NeoLink to access the files on the NAS via a PC connected to the network. I still could not play FLAC files (but could play mp3 & WAV files).

In addition, I tried a TwonkyVision add-in on the NAS - again I could play mp3s, but not FLAC. I have the latest RAIDiator running on the NV+.

I am able to play the FLAC files from the NAS with Windows Media Player (v10) on the PC (via Windows Explorer - not a media streamer).

The FLAC files play on the X5000 from a burnt disc.

Also, Using NeoLink 1.3 I can play the FLAC file on my PC's hard disc through the X5000.

The router I'm using is a Netgear WPN824v2 (and I have made sure that uPnP is turned on in its admin pages). The X5000 & ReadyNAS NV+ are connected to it via CAT-5 cable.

Services I have enabled on the ReadyNAS NV+ are uPnP AV and Home Media Streaming Server, and the TwonkyVision add-in.

Does anyone have any ideas?

There is a bug in the last couple of X5000 firmware upgrades that stopped FLAC working. They are working on it and due to release a new version very shortly I think . There is a beta release here if you want to try it: http://www.helios-labs.com/download/X5082407.rar

Alternatively try and get hold of the pre January f/w (1.2 I think).

While you are at it you might want to try myiHome server which is a more fully featured version of the Helios server: http://www.neodigits.com/download/myihome_vista.zip

Still won't play FLACS though until the f/w is fixed.

There is more information on the Helios User forum.

Another option is to try one of the transcoding media servers (TVersity for example) as it converts your FLAC files to WAV before presenting them to the Helios. Nerohome and Simplecentre do the same but are not free.
