Slimserver and Moose

Postby BigMike » Thu May 11, 2006 10:39 am

Moose is a Windows application that allows you to browse your music library and control a SqueezeBox player

Has anyone out there run this with Slimserver running on Infrant box? I have never been able to see album art in the 'library' view, and I'm wondering if it is something in my setup, or is it something with slimserver on the infrant ...

Are you letting Moose scan your files, or are you using SlimServer's database? If you're not already using SlimServer's database, it may work better for you that way. The path to SlimServer's SQLite database should be something like "\\[NAS_name\slimserver\.slimserversql.db".

Good. I was scanning files, but I switched to the database scan that you pointed out and got that working. So now I get some artwork in my library view as well as the "now playing" view. But there is still a lot (most) of my artwork that does not show in the library view, only in the now playing view. I'm wondering if it has to do with id3 tag versions or something. When I browse my lbrary with iTunes, artwork is visible on everything though.

check out the Slim Devices forum for some chit-chat about this, including from Dr Lovegrove himself - BTW he recommends that if you're using SQLite, make sure you either stop slimserver briefly, or point Moose at a copy of the db file - apparently, SQLite only likes 1 program talking to it at a time..
browse to \\[NAS Name]\slimserver\.slimserversql.db and copy it to the computer that you operate Moose from - populate the moo file from the copied db file
not sure about the album art, but i have similar issues - have yet to iron it out; you can create the thumbnail for the thumb folder and change teh name to the correct format - pain to do, but it does work (i have tried it)

Suppose I'm trying to avoid the LOOONNGGG re-scanning of my music files, located on the readynas.

Can I use Moose to scan the files and then (manually) export/move the SQLite db file to the readynas?

In other words, only use Moose to periodically rescan the readynas files, but to use the readynas slimserver add-on to play the actual music? (My goal is to leave the readynas on 24x7 to play music - but to turn off the PC when not in use.)

Thanks.

No, that won't work. If you're just trying to add couple new folders to your database though, you can just go to "Browse Music Folder", and once you browse into those folders, they will be added to the database automatically. That will allow you to avoid a complete rescan. Other than that, you can set up SlimServer to do an automatic nightly rescan at, say, 3AM.

Thanks for the feedback.

Sadly, I have a HUGE mp3 collection (73% of a 1.6TB system) and the last time the complete scan was run - it was still chugging along at the 36 hour mark - after which I had to abort the scan because it was slowing down the system access times.

The only complaint I have about my purchase (and I have two systems, a X6 revB and an NV) - is the general unusability with my SlimBox3 device.

I use the two devices for a LOT of other media files and general backup chores - and I am completely satisfied with THAT choice (two BIG thumbs UP!) - but I do miss the Slim Server capability.

How about a faster CPU or larger memory cache next time round?

having explained how to copy the *.db file from readynas to local drive for moose to scan and having done it myself on Tuesday morning - i now find that i cannot browse to \\[NAS Name]\slimserver\ any more

anyone have some plain as the nose on your face reason for this?

Edit: a restart (of both NV and the laptop) did the trick - to complicate matters I had turned off NFS and turned it back on, so one of those three must have been the problem !! (Apologies for not being scientific about it !)

Cannot access the slimserver db file

Postby wlsmith » Wed Sep 20, 2006 9:23 pm

I have been unable to browse, mount, or otherwise access the hidden read-only //xxx/slimserver share. I'm using a week-old NV (3.00c1-p2) running Slimserver 6.3.1. Slimserver is the only streaming protocol I have enabled, and CIFS is the only file protocol. Security mode is "share", and I have no problems accessing the public shares or using the Slimserver web interface.

Is there something specific I need to do to enable the hidden share? Any help would be appreciated. :)

Does SlimServer work without Moose?
The only suggestion I have at the moment is to make sure your slashes are going the right direction. ( \\xxx\slimserver instead of //xxx/slimserver )

Slimserver works fine without Moose (just sluggish through the web interface).

Sorry for the typo in my earlier post... my slashes are actually backslashes. I can access the public shares (e.g., \\nas\media, \\nas\backup) just fine through several routes:
- Browsing through network neighborhood (Windows XP Home),
- Typing in the address (with proper backslashes) in Windows Explorer,
- Typing in the address in various application dialogs (MediaMonkey, MusicIP, etc), or
- Mounting the paths as a drive letter.

I just can't get to the hidden \\nas\slimserver share. Windows says it can't find the address and suggests I check the spelling or browse for it. :)

In other words, it's acting as if the hidden share doesn't exist (or possibly authentication has failed). Is this hidden share always available when Slimserver is running? Are there any configuration prerequisites (such as security) or required services (besides Slimserver)?

I've rebooted the NV, started and stopped Slimserver, rebooted my PC and tried to access from other PCs on my network with no change in behavior (i.e., I can access the public shares but not the hidden share).

Thanks!

All better. Thanks!

Can you tell me what you fixed? Also, is there a way to tell that the addon is in use (besides the log entry saying an update occurred)? Both RAIDiator and Slimserver seem to be showing the same version info as before.

Thanks for the fix.

Skywalker, can you give any instructions for setting up Moose to use the MySQL DB in the new Version 6.5? The previous setup for SQLite that worked for Slimserver Version 6.3 will no longer work with the latest version in the radiator beta. I tried to folow the directions on the Moose website, but I could not figure out how to edit the "my.tt" file as described there. TIA!

Yeah, it's all the same version. Looks like there's a bug where if you change security modes (possible a couple other settings), it disables the slimserver share. This addon it just a minor tweak of the config.
