Streaming movies to an iPhone?

Postby kcrossley » Wed Sep 14, 2011 6:31 pm

Is there anyway to stream VOB movie files from a ReadyNAS NV+ to an iPhone? If so, how do I set this up?

The NV+ is not powerful enough to do on-the-fly transcoding of VOB file to devices such as Iphone that uses the Airvideo app.

There is an Airvideo addon and Plex addon for X86 machines such at the NVX and PRO which do on-the-fly transcoding of VOB files for direct viewing on your Iphone's Airvideo or Plex apps which I use.

You will need to encode your VOB files to another video format (i.e. mp2) that you can stream from the NV via the DLNA service to your IPhone using an app such as MediaConnect or you might simply wish to consider upgrading your nas to a more powerful model if you are interested in HD video streaming.

You could go with an Readynas Ultra created for home use (see http://www.netgear.com/home/products/st ... fault.aspx for diskless models of the Ultra).

If you need Business features (i.e. Teaming, Failover, Active Domain, etc.) you should go with the Readynas Pro 2,4, or 6
(see http://www.netgear.com/home/products/st ... fault.aspx).

Is it actually possible to transcode VOB files using Plex as it doesn't work for me. Plex handles most formats but I seem to have problems with VOB. I guess the option is to convert them to a different format.

You'll need to convert those videos.

NB: A ReadyNas is not an excuse not to have a backup. Fire, theft, multiple disk failures, other hardware failure, floods, user negligence etc. can all result in loss of data.

Yes I know.

Most of my videos are avi or mp4v format which works great with most programmes. I tried to convert them with Handbrake but that doesn't work. It might be easier to rip them again into a more suitable format.

Cheers

Have you tried an iphone app called 8 player? There is a free version 8 player lite.
I have used this with great success for music and video, even over 3g.
On wifi it's fantastic.
I was having some issues with it over 3g but that was before installing the itunes 10.5+ addon fix.
I'll test it later and make sure it still works.

So finally what's the best choice, have an iPhone app streaming itself the VOB, or a Netgear NAS which transcodes the video on the fly?
Today it seems power is given to the network (cloud), so I will probably buy a more powerfull NAS too.
The Pro one seems overkill for me.
