Case_ID=17151ReadyNAS Ultra Plus 4 as removable drive on PC?

Postby NickHark » Mon Nov 14, 2011 11:10 pm

I am having a hell of a time trying to utilize my Ultra Plus as a media server that will stream my large music collection to my 4 Netgear MP101s.

I have tried Twonky on a PC but it cannot stream from a network drive, according to Twonky.

I have tried using the software that came with the MP101 but it cannot function if the library is on a network drive.

I have tried using ReadyDLNA but it doesn’t properly stream to my MP101s, stopping and starting unrepentantly.

Tonight I plugged the ReadyNAS into the PC using a USB cable hoping that the ReadyNAS would be seen as a local removable drive, but the PC does not see the drive.

I had read on your forums that PCs should be able to see a ReadyNAS plugged into the USB port.

Replacing the MP101s is not viable for me because the modern media players are designed for video but my use is solely for audio, and, thus the cost is prohibitive.

Should my ReadyNAS (RNDP400U) be seen by the PC?

The ReadyNAS cannot be used as a USB peripheral: http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/hardware/can_i_attach_the_readynas_to_a_usb_port_on_the_pc

However you can use iSCSI to mount a target on a network disk as if it were a local disk. Have a read of http://www.readynas.com/iSCSI

I hope this helps.

NB: A ReadyNas is not an excuse not to have a backup. Fire, theft, multiple disk failures, other hardware failure, floods, user negligence etc. can all result in loss of data.

Thanks for the help. I will ask further questions on the iSCSI thread.

By the way, I enjoyed the Emerites Australian Open last week, (won by an Aussie) and look forward to The Presidents Cup this week in your beautiful Country!
