Accessing NAS Duo elsewhere

Postby simonc801 » Sun Jun 17, 2012 8:34 am

Hello,

Please bear with me, I've looked at the FAQs and postings on the forum(s) and I'm still struggling on how to access my NAS Duo outside of my home. I've set up up a number of folders and users on the NAS at home and I can access data directly and through my home wireless network. It works great! However, I can't seem to do this from anywhere else - whether this is my next-door neighbours network or indeed anywhere else in the world. I'm sure that there's is nothing wrong with the hardware etc. it's just that I don't seem to have got to grips with the mechanism for external access. Do I need to set up FTP for the NAS? The only installed Add-On I have is ReadyNAS Photos II. Do I need another add-on for external access? Forgive my ignorance but I'm chasing my tail on this one.

Any guidance would be most appreciated.

Regards,
Simon

Have a read up on ReadyNAS Remote: http://www.readynas.com/remote

Thanks for the link mdgm however...

I should have said that when I can access the NAS off-site the only folder I can see is 'ReadyNAS' - not any of the other folders and files generated at home. This is regardless of whether I log in as admin or a user. For example, I can create and save a file titled fredbloggs.txt and save this to the folder ReadyNAS at work but when I try to access this file at home I can't find it.

I'm confused :-(

Are you using ReadyNAS remote for this? Or something else?

I am using ReadyNAS Remote. I can login OK and the folder ReadyNAS Shares in Windows Explorer but even if I double-click this folder, folders I created on the NAS don't appear.

Thanks,
Simon

I have 2 users using readynas remote. If the shares aren't there...

-Ensure that your Share account username/password matches the Windows/Mac logon username. If not create a local account on your PC that matches it. Retry. If not working, try logging on with that account and testing.
-Check setup http://www.readynas.com/?p=1435
-Test your account, ensure you can loginto your readynas profile:
https://remote.readynas.com/
-Remove/reinstall ReadyNAS remote (this fixed one issue i had on OSX6.8 where the readynas software mysteriously "vanished" but the tray icon remained...work that one out!)
-Try "automatic proxy detection".
-After you log in, it connects the relay in about 1 minute, look out for "You are now using a Relayed connection" before trying.

Hope this helps

If someone can clarify, I think I know where I'm going wrong...

I have the NAS running ok and I set up folders (as you would in windows) on the NAS thinking I would be able to access these folders remotely thorugh ReadyNAS Remote. I've since realised that remote access to data must be through Shares configured via Frontview. Am I correct?

Thanks,
Simon

I'm also effectively new to this so would appreciate some help. I have a ReadyNAS Duo (Sparc). Everything I want to acccess is Shared.

At home, I can access the files. I have set up ReadyNAS Remote BUT I assume that this needs to be running on a PC and I am about to keep the PC only for the 1% of things that I can't do on an iPad, so it will not be switched on most of the time.

So what I need to know is
1. What setting do I have to configure to make the Shared folders available (to me only) on my Work PC - please don't just say 'set up https' or whatever, I need to understand what to set them to.
2. What tools can I use to access the files on the Work PC

Thanks

Pete
