Issues with ESXi and NFS

Postby d-forehand » Fri Feb 05, 2010 2:52 pm

I'm using ESXi 4 with a ReadyNAS Pro and have encountered an issue when deleting a large amount of data. When logged into ESXi via SSH, if I remove backup vmdk files (ranging from 20 to 150 gig), the NFS store dismounts and I receive an Input/output error. This happens on two separate ESXi boxes. I have confirmed that if I perform the delete on one box, the other box also loses the NFS mount. My guess is that the NFS service on the ReadyNAS is crashing. Connectivity is restored after about 60-120 seconds, but the large file(s) haven't been removed. If I perform the delete again, it works about 90% of the time and only takes 1-2 seconds.

What's the NFS thread count (look under Services > Standard File Protocols in Frontview)?

NB: A ReadyNas is not an excuse not to have a backup. Fire, theft, multiple disk failures, other hardware failure, floods, user negligence etc. can all result in loss of data.

I think that's the default.

Perhaps there's an issue with trying to delete old snapshots using SSH while a VM is running?

I don't think the backup vmdk files are "in use" when the vm is running. They are basically just copies of the static vmdk file after the snapshot has been taken on the ESXi server. Also, I still have the issue when removing old vmdk files from vm's that are no longer active. Thanks for your suggestion though.
