How to make the NAS completely open

Postby PeterDorr » Tue Oct 05, 2010 3:16 am

I have my ReadyNAS Pro in a small Home office network with 3 different users all accessing the 5 different shares on it.
I am so struggling to give everybody full acces to all shares. I somehow can't get the settings right. I studied the User Manual and tried several things, but failed over and over  .

Could somebody please help me with:
a.) I want to reset all files to one owner called "Peter". some files were created by other people and now I cannot edit them.
b.) I would like all windows 7 users in my network to have full R/W acces to all folders, which setting do I need to set for each folder?

thanks so much for helping me

Welcome to the Forum !

Go to frontview-shares-click on each share and do the following.

Go to advance options.
change share folder owner to nobody.
change share folder group to nogroup.

Share folder owner rights: read/write
Share folder group rights: read/write
Share folder everyone rights: read/write

Check on :Set ownership and permission for existing files and folders in this share to the above settings. This option is useful in cases where you are changing security levels and need to workaround file access problems.

Check on: Grant rename and delete privileges to non-owner of file

Click apply.

This will reset everything on a share you must do this to all the shares you want to change.

Image

Then go to the "cifs" tab for each share and check on the following:

Advanced CIFS Permission

Check on: Automatically set permissions on new files and folders.

Check on: Do not allow ACL changes to be more restrictive than this.

When new files are created over CIFS, set file permission as follows. Group rights are permission for members of the file owner's group. Everyone refers to all other users not in the file owner's group.
Group rights: Read/Write
Everyone rights: Read/Write
When new folders are created over CIFS, set folder permission as follows. Group rights are permission for members of the folder owner's group. Everyone refers to all other users not in the folder owner's group.
Group rights: Read/Write
Everyone rights: Read/Write

After that click apply. This will give everyone capable of logging into the nas full access.

Hi,

Thanks soooooo much for this.
It really helped me a lot. At least I can now run the file synchronisation again on all PC's for all users (It's much safer to backup your date I was once told  )
I know you must have spend quite some time writing this all up for me, but I want you to know that I really appreciated your effort.

Thanks again from Peter in sunny Amsterdam (Netherlands)

Actually for backup you could try using rsync it is a feature of the ready nas.

NO problem my pleasure to help. Want to give a little back from what I have gotten here.

Enjoy !

Hi

I have a ReadyNAS NV+
Firmware: RAIDiator 4.1.7

I have followed the above post to the letter but still aren't able to give access to my Share to my VA in the Phillipines.

Here is what I have done so far:

1. She has installed ReadyNAS remote on her computer and created an account for herself.
2. I have opened RAIDar, gone to the ReadyNAS remote screen, searched for her email address and added her user name.
3. She has then logged in to ReadyNAS remote...right clicked the blue folder in system tray to connect, and has seen my Share.
4. She can open the Share to see the top level folders...but when she double clicks one of the internal folders it seems to load for 5 minutes, and then gets the following error message:

Share1 is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the adminstrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

This is what lead me to the above post...
Incidentally, my CIFS tab looks completely different to that shown above...I don't have that many options:

http://screencast.com/t/lQh5QOIaPtM

Any help greatly appreciated....I have spent countless hours on this trawling this forum...i've run out of ideas!?

It seems that if you followed my instructions to the letter there should be no problems but you said that you CIFS does not have the same options listed that may be the cause of your problems.

You also said that you are using ReadyNas Remote which is a different issue all together.

I recommend starting a Technical Support online submission you can use the link in my signature to go there. Post back here you case number. And post the solution if it is related. I suspect you may need a Frimware reinstall NOT A FACTORY DEFAULT. Make sure your data is backed up prior to doing the Firmware reinstall to the nas.

No the pro and nv+ both have it. I have both

Edit: Here is the image for the NV; as you can see its located under the cifs tab and you scroll down to it. If you do not see this and tried a firmware re-install which will not harm your data I suggest you contact online tech support. You can use my sig below to contact them.

Interesting, I thought this was just my PC but I'll give this a try when I'm home later and update on progress.

Incidentally @ sdouek - you need to rehost your images ;-)

When I click "Apply", this checkbox clears itself. I did get a confirmation message, but the box stays unchecked.

Like others who have already answered, I don't have the CIFS and AFP options you mention. Mine is a fresh reinstall of the 4.1.7 software on a ReadyNAS NV+.
I would love to solve this, since I think it is the cause of my being unable to set permissions on the NAS via Windows 7, and permission problems seem to be causing Squeezebox Server to be uanble to scan my Music share.

Thank you, I will try this. I want the NAS Wide open for anyone and everyone who can log into the NAS..

Originally I had "Guest Access" checked, is that necessary for logged in clients to have full read, write, edit access, or does Guest Access only allow someone who is not logged into to access the NAS??

Logged in clients will have read and write permissions based on the settings for the share and the permissions settings on the files and folders. Guest access is for users who do not have logins and passwords.

I've got a question related to this issue:

On my Duo i have all registered users in a group called "users".
If I have a share where there's only one user listed under "write enabled users" on the CISF-tab (no groups listed), and I set ownership and permission for existing files and folders to nobody/nogroup on the "advanced options" tab, will the files and folders in this share be available to other users (or even guests) regardless of the CIFS share access restrictions ?
Or will the CIFS share permissions take precedence over the permissions of files and folders in the share?

I have also problems with permissions on files and folders in the private home shares, after I (logged in as root or admin) were copying files and folders directly to the to the home folders of other users.
How do I set file/folder ownership and permissions to match the corresponding user on the private home shares?

Erlend.

Your CIFS settings determine who will be able to connect to the share. If a user cannot connect to the share, it doesn't matter what the permissions are on the files. Once the user is connected, the permissions on the files and folders will determine what the user can do.

You'll need to use this addon:
