Need help with permissions

Postby GuiGuy » Tue Jul 17, 2012 12:48 am

Hi all,
I have a mix of Win7 and Linux PCs accessing the my ReadyNAS NV+ (4.1.8)

The readynas is in default state, ie there are two shares only, backup and media

Read, write and delete files from the Win7 PC is fine.

Under linux it's crazy. I can write to the ReadyNAS but the permissions go to read only, even for the owner on the linux machine that originally created the file. Attempts to chmod fail.

So how can I set the permissions for files on the ReadyNAS? Is there some sort of root access? I see mention of Advanced options on shares from Frontview, but I see absolutely nothing that seems relevant.

As the subject says, help!

Thanks

You say you can't chmod? Are you SSHing your NAS? Afaik you can't chmod the folders from your linuxmachine unless you have appropriate rights.

If you SSH your device you can chmod / chown the folders in question, but that might also bork up the access from your Windows machine.

When you access the NAS from your linux machine, are you being prompted with a username and password? (not a linux guy really, so bare with me if I fail :P)

The advanced options are to overwrite ownership in general to access your files if they are inaccessible. Since you can access them from your windowsmachine, I guess this is alright.

Under the shares you have to activate NFS sharing for the shares you want to access from your linux machine (unless linux can operate against CIFS), and then you have to set NFS rights. This might do the trick.

Do the UIDs and GIDs for the users on the NAS and on your Linux machines match? If not, this might be your problem.

If you go to Shares > Share Listing > Sharename > NFS and click on the Advanced Options tab you can reset the ownership and permissions for the share as mentioned.

NB: A ReadyNas is not an excuse not to have a backup. Fire, theft, multiple disk failures, other hardware failure, floods, user negligence etc. can all result in loss of data.
