I had 5 min and then 30. No change.

Hi, I have got exactly the same behaviour with mt ReadyNas nv+ with 4.1.4

I have 4 Seagate HD 1tb ST31000340AS with all SD15 firmware.

The second disk never spins off.

Initially I initialized one disk at a time.. then When I inserted the second one, it became the redundant disk..(I assume)

Do you think I should open a ticket ?

We may have a clue what might be causing the problem. Anyone having issues, please try this addon. You must be running either 4.1.3 or 4.1.4 for this addon to work.

When you say "not spinning down", how do you know? Do the logs not say it's spinning down? Or are you just checking by listening to the noise from the system?

:) Indeed, I didn't check the logs... But adding my issue description to this thread (with some people digging into their logs) because I'm convinced the same issue is happening to me.
I determine Disk 2 si not spinning down due to heat difference between the two HDD (5 to 7°C) as indicated by Health/Smart+, the noise coming from the Netgear Duo case (I can compare with the other Duo I have),...
And... Oh yes! Because RAIDar 4.1.4 is stating Disk 1 is down and Disk 2 is running.

Hi, I didn't check my logs as well,

I stated the same way, because of temperature difference on each disk, and also because RAIDar said so when hoving over each disk, showing the tooltip telling disk 1,3 and 4 are sleeping

FYI, all SMART commands will wake up the disks. So if you get any temperature reading at all, that means the disk is not spun down. Also, keeping the Frontview window open will keep spinning the disks up, because it queries the disk temperature. Can you compare what RAIDar reports vs what system.log says about the disks spinning down?

Hi,
Witch log are you refering too?
The logs in Raidar under Status has never logged the spinning down.

...and daemon.log has always said the disks were spun down, even though they weren't.

Best way to find out is keeping an ssh session open and checking with hdparm.

Thank you for these details but, please stop chasing faulty issue report on user side.
I don't let Frontview open. I do the following : Both of Netgear Duos are not use during the required time, then I open Frontview and go directly to the Health menu, reading the temps. It takes few seconds as, indeed, the drives need to wake up...
There is no reason to have so significant temperature difference (5-7°C) between the 2 Seagate drives, except the fact that the hotter (Disk 2) remains active.

System.log says "Spinning down /dev/hde" and "Spinning down /dev/hdc" but as Zappes wrote, this is obviously not executed by the Seagate Disk on Disk 2 slot.

Some of the information I gave here already before I was lead to this thread: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=19602
and Dooku should have received some syslogs from different users a long time ago.
To summarize it: Raidar says only Disk 1 is hibernating while at the same time the syslog says that both are sleeping. In fact Raidar is right cause I checked aurally by pulling the different disks. If I pull #2 I can hear it spinning down and #1 coming up. If I pull #1 there's no change in sound. Also you can hear a disk (which obviously must be #2) clicking now and then. Also when I bought the ReadyNAS and it only had one disk inside I checked that it had like 11w when hibernating. Now it has 16w when it's supposed to be hibernating with two disks inside. I don't think a second sleeping disk would use 5w.

Let's face it: hibernation is not working in many cases and lots of users just didn't realize it yet.

OK.. here is what I did... basing on human senses... no more RAIdar or Logs !

I have an instant consumption meter on the ReadyNas (220v)
with 4x 1TB Seagate

when in used
Consumption: 68w

I have waited time to spin down (RAIDar and Widget tell me that all HD are sleeping, except disk 2)
Consumption : 37w

I hot removed disk 2.. I FEEL interty of spining... and I can HEAR it spinning down
and All 3 remaining disks spun up
Consumption : 55w

I have waited time to spin down (RAIDar and Widget tell me that all 3 remaining HD are sleeping)
Consumption : 28w

It is now resyncing the volume...
Now.. there is no other way to believe the HD2 WAS NOT spun down

but I feel like this is nothing to do with hardware, I feel it because disk2 is the redundant disk.
In my case, I started with 2 HD, and expanded it with 2 new ones.

No spinning down here either...
