Wow, 3TB internal drives are now released! Yes! It may/may not work.

NetGear will hopefully order some of these and try them out to see if they work. If they pass NetGear's rigorous tests they will then be added to the HCL.

Personally I don't like WD Green drives, but hopefully these ones will run fine. I would suggest waiting for NetGear to approve 3TB drives before purchasing them.

Engadget had the news today, 3TB will be going for $239 and the 2.5TB unit going for $189. Wow the possibilities, a Readynas Pro Pioneer sporting 18TB worth of drives....

It does sound good. As there may be compatibility issues with these drives it is advisable to wait for NetGear to test them. Disks >2TB in size is a big step into the unknown. It is exciting!

It will be interesting to find out if these drives need WDIDLE3 to be run on them before use.

This hopefully means the Seagate 3TB drives are right behind!

I am speculating that it may be. The Readynas architecture is built on Linux which should be compatible.

Although, it may need a firmware revision perhaps.

It should not -- WDIDLE3 isn't listed for any drive in the Caviar Green / GP series: http://support.wdc.com/product/download ... 08&lang=en

It is listed for the RE2-GP series models WD1000FYPS-01ZKB0, WD7500AYPS-01ZKB0, WD7501AYPS-01ZKB0 http://support.wdc.com/product/download ... 09&sid=113

Heck, if a Jedi would day it "should work," that might be enough for me to give it a go. ;)

That is true, but several Caviar disks have exhibited the Load Cycle Count issue and the WDIDLE3 utility can be used to address that.

If that's the case, then it's a non-starter for me. I'm not going to buy a PC just so I can run the utility.

load cycle count issue is far overblown
nv+ ~ 1gb ram ~ 4x WDC WD20EARS-00S8B1 ~ 5555 GB
ultra4 ~ 4 gb ram ~ 2x ST31500341AS ~ 2x ST4000DX000-1C5160 ~ 6471 GB
pro business ~ 4gb ram ~ dual redundancy ~ 4x Hitachi HDS724040ALE640 ~ 2x SAMSUNG HD204UI ~ 9130 GB
A/V streaming ---> Subsonic ---> EVO 3D

chirpa says they won't work with 4.2.15. Support is being worked on an expected to be included in 4.2.16

thanks m,I am guessing that would be across the board for the x86 devices. Which is great news for my full Pro

Any idea if 6 of them with X-Raid and Dual Redundancy in the 3200/4200 would be enough to break the 16tb reset requirement? (or has this been addressed in firmware)

6x3TB with dual-redundancy would give 12TB of space - overheads etc. so it wouldn't break this limit. You could even have seven in there.

But I wouldn't use these drives in a 3200/4200. Only use drives from the HCL.

You need enterprise disks with rotational vibration safeguard in the 3200/4200. Wait for an enterprise disk to hit the market for the 3200/4200. For now there are plenty of 2TB drives you can use. You could factory default with the disks in place to get more than 16TB of space.

The limit still applies in 4.2.15 (http://www.readynas.com/RAIDiator_x86_4_2_15_Notes) and I don't know when it'll be lifted (it'll require updates to the utilities used for expansion. Updates to these utilities will need to be stable and thoroughly tested before this happens, of course).
