Readynas Pioneer Ed for $999 - hmm, tempting?

Newegg has the Pioneer for $1199 with a $200 Netgear rebate. Newegg is not advertising the rebate on the Pioneer but if you download the rebate form for the Pro you'll see the Pioneer there for -$200.

So, is that tempting? I'm thinking about it. I'd much rather buy a diskless NVX for $999! Thoughts?

Seems like a pretty nice deal. I've been checking out other vendors, and the lowest price I've been able to find after rebate and/or cashback is about $924.

is the NVX a better system then the PRO? I thought it was mid way in between the duo and the pro?

NVX is 4 disk, Pro and Pioneer are 6 disk. Pioneer is feature limited, no ISCSI, no Windows AD, no secure RSYNC, no failover for dual LAN ports, etc... The plus is that it has R/W speed!

NVX and Pro have similar feature sets.

For me, NVX is also smaller and consumes less energy.

its slightly below the pro in terms of performance.. it leaves all other (older) netgear nases in the dust though.

Pro (Pioneer & Business Edition) both are exactly the same in terms of hardware (1.80 GHz Dual Core). There may be a bit of a performance difference in multi-client situations due to the lack of bonding/teaming on the Pioneer, but all-in-all, you should see the same results (approx. 100 MB/s max.):

The NVX uses the Intel Tolapai @ 1.06 GHz, has max throughput around 85 MB/s, 4 bays and includes all of the Pro Business Edition features (bonding, AD, Rsync over SSH, cloning, iSCSI, etc.), except dual drive redundancy (using either X-RAID2 or Flex-RAID6):

I bit on the rebate. The Pioneer is loud; louder than the G4 MDD which had tons of user complaints about noise. The NVX is hopefully much quieter, but it's very pricey.

There's a post about a problem with the fan spinning at 4400 RPM:

viewtopic.php?f=24&t=27404

Also, there's another about the NVX diskless at just over $1,000:

EDIT: appears to be sold out! :)

I wonder if I got the only one in stock....anyone else here order a diskless NVX today? :) Regardless of what the spec sheet says, I'm hoping the NVX isn't as loud as the NV+. I called eAegis and spoke with one of their techs for 10 minutes or so, and he assured me it was definitely quieter than the NV+. I'm pretty sensitive to noise, so I hope he was on point. Otherwise, I'll probably swap it out for a Pro Business with a 4 pin CPU fan :).
