is setting NTFS permissions possible?

Please post questions or problems pertaining to integrating the ReadyNAS into your Windows domain or active directory environment.

is setting NTFS permissions possible?

Postby IESTech » Wed May 28, 2008 1:18 pm

When it said it could be easily integrated into active directory i was rather fooled expecting that NTFS permissions would be possible. This will be terribly hard to manage for my application if it's not possible.

is it possible to set, manage, and use NTFS permissions on this device?

NTFS permissions are not possible. But from the AD, you can set security permissions on shares/folders. Browse the NAS via the DC, Properties>Security, and you can assign stuff there. When joined to the domain, the NAS asks for the DC for authentication of items.

so say i were to put some archive files on the NAS and I needed to assign permissions to the users via group policy, is that possible? basically i figured the NAS could act just as if it were an actual hard drive on the server.

This isn't possible afaik (yet) - probably easiest solution for this atm. is a storage device based on MS Storage Server (stripped down w2k3 R2 server) or possibly a tweaked MS 'Home Server' based device?

The only solution I've found for the Readynas(and similar) to maintain the granularity of the ACL's on the MS server is via backupsoftware which compresses or uses proprietary archive files for storage on the NAS. (e.g. Genie Backup, Backup Exec etc.).
Easiest to manage is sadly still DAS devices, which ofcourse act just as an internal hd..
TS109pro fw.2.0.1-0324T
Readynas NV+ fw. 4.01c1-p1
Zyxel NSA-2400 fw. 2.11

w2k3/3Ware 9500-12

the reason i ask is basically because here is the setup that we have. ...

1) we have archives that are assigned access to specifically based upon group, and we want to move all of these archives off the server and onto the ReadyNAS.

2) within that archive the users cannot create project folders.
3) ...however, they have read, write, modify, etc permissions on the files and folders within the project folders themselves.

for example, could i assign active directory groups to different shares on the ReadyNAS? from what i gather so far the answer is no.

so following that, my question is what is the best way to effectively administer permissions to groups as we have them currently using what the ReadyNAS is capable of?

Yes. You would do it via the CIFS permissions for the share in question through Frontview, as at the share level it needs to be done through Frontview.

Also keep in mind that modify, delete, etc permissions do not exist outside of windows, so you will need to assign permissions based on read/write/execute.
