Domain Controller Alternatives?

Postby volxlov » Thu Jun 05, 2008 3:20 am

Looking for recommendations on running a domain controller other than a Windows. Are there any open source domain controllers out there that will work with the ReadyNAS?

Samba, which runs on Linux and other platforms, can be a PDC,

Are there any tutorials on how to setup samba as a PDC and have all my ReadyNAS devices authenticate to it?

I have about 7 ReadyNAS NV/+, 2 of those which are in a remote office and I plan on purchasing two more ReadNAS 1100's to replace our primary file server which is one of those NV's. All but the 2 remote NAS's are authenticating from an old school Windows Back Office Server NT4.0 server sitting under my desk. I'd like virtualize the new PDC and have all my NAS devices authenticate to that. Would like to dump the Windows NT Server already.

Also, if I migrate from NT4 to Samba can I migrate permissions? or will that have to be setup again in Samba and reset for all shares?

Thanks,
Rob

Might be some tutorials out there, but would have to do some google searching.
