Changing AD Domain

Postby At-At » Thu Jan 27, 2011 8:09 am

Hi

As part of some major upgrades, we are going to be changing our Active Directory domain in the near future and I wanted to ask whether this have any effect on the data stored on our 1000S, i.e. will my shares remain, or will I need to recover the data from a backup?

I understand that the general procedure is to change the NAS security model back to User and then on to the new Domain. After that I'll need to set the permissions up against the new Domain; is that all I should need to do?

Thanks

The shares will remain, however you'll need to connect as an administrator to move data from the private user shares to somewhere else, and possibly need to reset file permissions(you can do this via the advanced tab for the CIFS permissions for each share in Frontview).

OP, sorry to interrupt your thread but I've had to do something similar but was not able to change the permissions on one share. Is it possible to reset the permissions or wipe permissions from the frontview interface? I've already attempted to change the domain settings within frontview from DOMAIN (old server) to ADS new server) and now am not able to connect to one of my shares which prompting for a username and password.

You can go to Shares > Share Listing > Sharename > CIFS, go to the Advanced Options tab and use that to reset permissions.

NB: A ReadyNas is not an excuse not to have a backup. Fire, theft, multiple disk failures, other hardware failure, floods, user negligence etc. can all result in loss of data.

mdgm, I changed the following settings: Share folder owner: administrator, Share folder group: Domain admins.

I've also enabled this option:
Code: Select all
Set ownership and permission for existing files and folders in this share to the above settings. This option is useful in cases where you are changing security levels and need to workaround file access problems.

I've update those settings this morning (10am HST) and still could not access using the administrator account for my domain since I'm supposedly connected to it. I'm not sure if I have the group correct, I assume that since the administrator is a part of the Domain admins group that I'd add that in as well. Should I have left that blank?

Thanks for your help.
