Can't search files on my ReadyNAS Pro 4 NAS Server

Postby readysteady » Thu Mar 29, 2012 4:04 am

We recently bought two pro 4 NAS servers to use as our work server and off site backup.

We can't search for any files though, completely stuck. At times this is a big problem, especially when trying to track down old job numbers / files

Has anyone else had this issue? and do you know of a fix? we are Mac only so not tested it whilst using a PC. We only have AFP active too

Many thanks in advance!!!

What version of RAIDiator?

You could manually enable fast searching using SSH: (edit whoops: should check what I'm linking to).

NB: A ReadyNas is not an excuse not to have a backup. Fire, theft, multiple disk failures, other hardware failure, floods, user negligence etc. can all result in loss of data.

If you are trying to search NAS contents from Finder then this is unfortunately a known issue. Spotlight will not index a NAS Network Volume and so Finder must conduct a folder by folder scan which is notoriously slow to the point of being unusable.

The latest version of AFP support is supposed to offer fast search support but it is not enabled on ReadyNAS devices for various reasons (The link given is to a private beta forum that discusses that limitation and manual enabling of fast search doesn't actually seem to work in my experience)

Many thanks for the reply, appreciate it

That's a real shame, can't believe such a basic piece of functionality isn't currently supported. Nightmare, to say the least.

Must admit, if I had known I couldn't search my drives from Mac I wouldn't of bought the servers. Gutted

I agree it is a significant limitation

There are search utilities outside finder you can use - search the forum. Forget the names but one is free. Or if you inclined you can SSH into your NAS and enable locatedb indexing. Not ideal, but does work and enable command line searching
