Strange Speed Issue [support case #18901615]

Postby ianch99 » Mon May 14, 2012 6:16 am

I am seeing a strange problem when copying files from my using my Duo v1 (2TB HD204UI X-RAID) to a Mac (Mac Pro and Macbook Pro). I am using firmware 4.1.8 and Mac OS 10.7.4 over a gigabit LAN. On the Duo, all the Performance Options are enabled. The Duo is also set to restart daily.

The problem is this: when I copy a large file from the media share to my desktop, I will get around 10MB/s transfer rate (measured using Activity Monitor). This will remain around this figure until the copy is done. However, if I, while the copying is in progress, right click on the file using Finder and select "Make Alias", the speed will increase to around 25MB/s and stay at this speed until the copy is complete. It will also remain at this speed for subsequent copies. If I dismount and re-mount the share, the slow speed returns .. This is the same for AFP and SMB protocols

Why would writing to the share when the file is being read, increase the speed so dramatically?

Weird ..

Maybe if anyone has a Duo v1 and is getting slow transfer speeds with 4.1.8, they could give this test a go and see if they also see this speed uplift when you alias the file being copied?

4.1.9 (currently in public beta: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=59222) addresses the performance issues with 4.1.8.

NB: A ReadyNas is not an excuse not to have a backup. Fire, theft, multiple disk failures, other hardware failure, floods, user negligence etc. can all result in loss of data.

Upgraded to 4.1.9 and still see this problem. I can get ~20MB/s copying large file to my Mac with afpd process using 95% CPU. Create an alias in the directory I am copying from and the rate increases to ~45MB/s plus the cpu usage of afpd goes down to around 60% ..

If I dismount the share and re-mount, the same thing can be repeated

Does an OS Re-install on your Duo (v1) make any difference? See http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/boot/how_do_i_use_the_boot_menu

If not, perhaps open an online tech support (http://www.readynas.com/support) case. Please edit the thread title (i.e. subject of first post in the thread) to include your case number.
