Access Readynas Time Machine over the Internet

Postby scottandersonuk » Sun Jul 15, 2012 6:02 pm

Hi.

Can someone help me. I have a readynas that I have enabled timemachine on.
However, I want my Macbook to be able to access the time machine over the internet while I am away from home. (I work abroad most of the time).

Can someone tell me how I configure time machine on the macbook to see the ReadyNas over the internet and what port I need to open on the router?

Thanks

Scott

This is a bad idea in my opinion on so many levels. Some that come to mind include:

1. As far as I am aware Time Machine is not designed for backups over the internet
2. Speeds would be very slow especially when you're abroad. I certainly wouldn't want to attempt to restore my whole system over the internet.
3. I believe I read somewhere that 10.8 Mountain Lion (will be released soon) allows you to backup using Time Machine to multiple drives. I'd suggest using a USB/Firewire/Thunderbolt (depending on what Mac model you have) disk for TM backups when away from home and the NAS when at home.

NB: A ReadyNas is not an excuse not to have a backup. Fire, theft, multiple disk failures, other hardware failure, floods, user negligence etc. can all result in loss of data.
