NV+ won't mount USB drive

Postby fkearney » Sun Jun 17, 2012 9:43 am

I am trying to back up my NV+ to an external hard drive connected to the USB port on the front. When I connect, the NV+ recognizes the USB drive. When I hold the backup button for 5 seconds to mount the drive I get this:
The device attached to the front USB port could not be properly mounted. Please try again.

I have tried again - often - I have rebooted the NV+, all to no avail.
The external hard drive is a WD My Book Essential 3TB with 3.0 capability. Any ideas as to what I am missing? I am using raidiator 4.1.8

Thank you for any help.

I believe 3TB drives are GPT drives and as such can't be used with the NV+. You'd have to partition it as a 2TB and 1TB, though I'm not sure how to do this with an external USB myself. Here's an article discussing the problem(s):

But if I am going directly into the ReadyNAS+, doesn't that preclude any windows issues, or does the NAS operating system have the same flaw?

Yes it's a problem with the Sparc/Linux NV+ as it is with older Windows. Here's a link I found where a guy tells of re-partitioning his WD:

Now that I think of it, you're best off formatting as EXT3 or EXT2 (as I have) with your external drive. Maybe it can be partitioned using Puppy Linux which is what I used to format my 2TB. If you don't want to do that maybe you can return it and get a 2TB.
