Dashboard backup principles

Postby Ferdinand » Thu Jun 28, 2012 12:48 pm

Hi there,
Just got my first ReadyNAS nv+ v2 and was testing the backup tool. Am I missing something or all it does is make a copy the source's files?

For testing purposes, I setup a single RAID 0 volume C over 2 HDD. I made a backup of volume C to a USB device.

No compression? I will need a drive the same size as my total NAS?

How about the restore? In case of failure, I get the NAS ready then just manually copy the files back?

I was hoping for a tool more "usefull" then that...

It is just a backup utility it does not clone your drives, and you do not need a drive the same size you can backup the data to what ever you want and where ever you want eg: usb device, another Nas, offsite storage.

How those it work then?

I created a new job: Source=volume c , Destination=usb drive.
Once the backup is done, on my usb drive I find the exact same directories and files as the original volume c.
Therefore, it uses the exact same amount of space.

I was expecting a single compressed file on my usb drive (size depending on compression quality) named something related to the job name. And I could have used this file as a restore source.

What I am doing wrong? Or am I expecting to much pf the dashboard backup tool?

It just backs up what you choose eg: it could be 1 folder or 1 file, it does not compress it and when you want to restore you just copy the data back to where ever you want it, for example lets say you have 1.5TB of data on your c: drive and you have 2 1TB usb drives, you could choose to backup up half of it on 1 usb drive and the other half on the second usb drive, if you want to create a compressed backup image you will need to use a third party backup program.
