As your said, add a new backup job from remote to NAS:

Source :remote Windows
Host:IP address of the Windows XP Machine (for example: 10.40.0.149)
Path: My Documents (for example: abc) (Must be open the Shared folder)
Login: user name (If log in Windows XP machine, need to enter your user name and password )
Password: password (If log in Windows XP machine, need to enter your user name and password )

Destination: share: backup

If the folder of Windows XP machine is not open share folder, I could get the same error message:

"Error: Cannot connect to share because of an incorrect network name or permission was denied."

Hello all
I was having some problems working this out and after several hours eventually solved it,
select the folder you want to share right click and select properties, then sharing tab and select advanced sharing,
tick share this folder then click permissions at bottom, all you need to have is administrators,
but make sure your log on account for windows is admin account.
Edit: It may help to add everyone permissions aswell but i found i did not need it.

Image

click ok and go back to advanced sharing tab, take notice of the share name,
the folder i am sharing is My Pictures but the share name is only pictures.

Image

now go to frontview and set up your backup job

Image

remember what i said about taking note of the share name, as you can see above the path only has to be pictures
because thats how the share will show up on the network so your NAS will find it ok.
dont forget to put in your user name and password that you log onto windows with and all should work fine.
hope this helps someone it can be frustrating i know.

Didn't work for me I'm afraid. Job runs completes with no files copied.

Same problem here, test connections all work, click to run a backup, starts and goes for about 2 minutes and stops - no errors , no log. Doesn't copy a thing.

As a test, have you tried setting the Backup Options; Shedule Ful Backup to "Everytime" and then re-run the backup job?
I'm just suggesting this in case it thinks the 1st abckup has already been completed and hence only trying to do an incremental backup.

Just to add my experience, I am running Windows 7 and cannot get backup to recognize any remote shares as everyone above mentioned.

If you are having problems with sharing on windows 7 try adjusting these settings see if this helps.

If you log into windows 7 with no password set one up now control panel user accounts when this is done follow steps below.

Please check related policies.
1. Enter “gpedit.msc” in the Start Search box.
2. Open “Computer Configuration”/Windows Settings/Security Settings/Local Policies/Security Settings.
3. In the right pane, enable the following policies:
Network access: Allow anonymous SID/name translation
Network access: Let Everyone permissions apply to anonymous users

Also please disable the following policies.
Network access: Restrict anonymous access to Named Pipes and Shares
Network access: Do not allow anonymous enumeration of SAM accounts
Network access: Do not allow anonymous enumeration of SAM accounts and shares
Change the following policy:
Network security: LAN Manager authentication level
Change the value to “Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated”.
Now exit here

Right click folder you want to share select share with homegroup read/write
If its a drive share with advanced sharing tick the share this folder box then into permissions everyone tick full control
Restart pc

Just on another note the folders that copied all contained no spaces in the file description.

Worth looking at!

I've tried all the things suggested by Herbieo, but I'm still getting the cryptic error message:
"Error connecting to //Lunga/LungaData/documentsTim"

I've had ReadyNAS running on another computer for more than two years (with WinXP). Now I have swapped it for a Win7 x64 m/c, with essentially the same disk and file structure, and I cannot get past this point.
Computer Network Name: Lunga
Hard Drive (D) name: LungaDate. Sharing: Advenced sharing as 'D',Permissions: Everyone: Full Control
Folder name: documentsTim. Sharing: Everyone, Administrator, Tim

A backup job set up for a VISTA m/c using the same procedure, is working OK. It points more and more to a Win7 x64 problem in the ReadyNAS.

If anyone has any further suggestions I'd be most grateful to hear them.

ramasaig - you should start your own thread on this.

This should include info on which NAS you are running (and what firmware).

I was thinking the same thing, although this thread appears (mostly) to be about ReadyNAS Duo V2, which is what I've got.
I will start a new thread.
