VMware backup to USB HDD?

Postby made » Thu Sep 24, 2009 5:55 am

Hi there,

I wonder if I could backup snap-shotted VMware files to an USB attached harddrive. Problem looks like this: The virtuals harddisks of my vms are thin-provisioned, using only the space occupied on the NAS, but showing the full size via CIFS. If I copy those files to a HDD, will it occupy the full virtual-hdd size (lets say 100GB) or only the space occupied (let say 10 GB, which shows via NFS)?

Best regards,
Marc

I haven't tried it myself, but a backup of a sparse file to an ext3 formatted USB drive should result in a sparse target file.

It will occupy the full space as seen in CIFS. You can try running some compression on the VMware side to un-expand the sparse files.

Not sure of the commands in VMware to do this, but VirtualBox works like this: http://kakku.wordpress.com/2008/06/23/v ... disk-size/
