Mirror a readyNAS DUOs

Postby alexnb » Tue Jun 12, 2012 3:21 pm

I have searched around, but found no solution that would work for me.

Here is the setup I have.

I have a ReadyNAS DUO box that I use to store files and I add new files, change files, and delete files on a daily basis. This works fine for that. I have another readyNAS DUO I want to use as a mirror of that. I don't want the other drive to have to do a full backup everyday, I want to do an incremental backup. This is do-able with windows archive-bit. HOWEVER, it does not delete the files I have deleted on the original NAS box. I want to be able to have a backup of the drive that is a perfect mirror.

I have seen things about rsync, but don't really understand it and how I could use it.

I would really appreciate it if anyone could offer me some help in a solution. Thank you!

One question I have about this set-up using rsync is what happens if a file is changed on NAS 1 after NAS 2 has synced with it, but before NAS 2 has synced with NAS 1. Wouldn't there be a discrepancy in the files?

Rsync is one way backup. There is an option on the Duo v1 in Frontview to check the option to "remove deleted files on...". This option is not available in the Dashboard on the Duo v2.

Well if you look at the link on the 1st reply it says to create a backup job on both NAS boxes, each essentially doing the same thing to the other. But if only 1 box is having users modify and change it, there only needs to be one backup scheduled right? I wouldn't need both NAS box's syncing, I just need the 2nd NAS box to mimic the first.

Is this correct?

Yes. Ah looking at that link in the example they have there different shares are used by the users local to each NAS so each site is providing the backup for the other one.

So it should work for me if I just set up rsync on the 2nd box and just have it set to backup everyday the updated info from NAS 1. That should work as planned right? I don't need to change any settings on NAS 1?

rsync worked great!

I have it set to backup every 4 hours now. I have tested it and it deletes the files that were deleted and updates any incremental files other than that. It works perfectly!

Thank you for all y'alls help.
