Problems duplicating between Ready NAS's using Retrospect

Postby victorhortaliveson » Mon Sep 22, 2008 6:37 am

I have a ReadyNAS and a ReadyNAS+ and am using WinXp Retrospect 7.6.111 to do a "Replace if source is newer" duplicate from one to the other.

Each time I do this Retrospect "finds" multi GB of files to copy across, BUT there should be nothing much to copy as I have changed only a few files in the source directories. (Adding a few new ones and updating a few others). So I am having to do this manually, which is a right pain. The files are media files (flac, mp4a, jpeg etc).

If I do this manually then I get execution errors that usually list differences between souce and destination due to time of creation for all new files copied. These are the only errors.

I thought it might have something to do with the clocks on the two NAS's and the clock on the PC, so I synched them all to time sources before the run (time.nist.gov on the pc and pool.ntp.org on the NAS's).

I also use the following settings on the Retrospect run options :

Verification on
Byte-by-byte client file comparison
Ignore file verification errors in security stream

PLUS all of the Don't duplicate Windows info options are checked.

I also checked AND unchecked the "Synchronize clock" option - no change

I'm sure this has something to do with a clock mismatch, but between what and what ?

Any expert views on where the problem is and what to change ?

Thanks

REPEAT

I've had no comment on this; Am I the only one with this sort of problem ?

UPDATE

Retrospect Forum feedback from the Manufacturer says that it is impossible to ensure clock synching when going between 2 ReadyNAS etc units so there will always be problems.

Personally I have given up on Retrospect and will probably go for ViceVersa Pro 2 from TGRMN Software. http://www.tgrmn.com.
I'm trying out the 30 day download and so far it works just fine. Seems to be slightly slower but does all the right things.

Check if there are any options when it come to time precision. Windows and ReadyNAS has different time resolutions.

Should be a option for that somewhere.
