Simplifying backup strategy with ReadyNAS

NTI Shadow Won't open after install

Postby vigordesign » Sat Jan 01, 2011 11:24 am

Heya!

I got my ReadyNAS Duo yesterday and I LOVE IT!!! It's all set up on my mac and backing up with time machine. I tried installing NTI Shadow on my wifes Windows 7 laptop and after I install it, the program won't launch. I can't seem to find any info on this. Anyone have any idea what's up?

Thanks!!

I'm starting to wonder if the version of Shadow that came with the readynas doesn't support Windows 7. hmm. Can anyone confirm this?

Kev

I got a Duo last Friday for use with Windows based systems. Came across your problem whilst looking for help resolving errors for backups to/from non-ReadyNAS initiated by DUO in Frontview. Having been setting-up applications on a new Win7 laptop over Xmas I have found that many of them are 32-bit & so need compatibility tweeks to run 64-bit. There is a wizard for this, but you can also just select the compatibility tab on the properties. WinXP SP3 is the latest OS that works for me on Win7.

Yes the version of NTI Shadow included with the ReadyNAS doesn't support Windows 7.

There must be workarounds, surely?

I've installed it on Windows 7 and from the desktop, if ye right click and 'run as administrator' then you can get into the program, configure a continuous backup and successfully run the first full one.

Then when the machine restarts, it's happily running in the background, creating a log file, but then ignoring the duties of updating the NAS with new files and changes to previous.

Close but no cigar... but leaves me wondering if it can be fixed (process or file permissions maybe?) or whether trying would be an effort wasted. After all Netgear (and incidently WD and Seagate) seem to have gone in the direction of Mameo Backup for this job.

Then again, it seems NTI are offering an upgrade to version 4 for 20 USD.

Me, I'm going to give that QuickShadow Backup software a go. (http://quicklytech.com])
