sane-backends 1.0.21
  • Description:
SANE stands for "Scanner Access Now Easy" and is an application programming interface (API) that provides standardized access to any raster image scanner hardware (flatbed scanner, hand-held scanner, video- and still-cameras, frame-grabbers, etc.). (...) If you're familiar with TWAIN, you may wonder why there is a need for SANE. Simply put, TWAIN does not separate the user-interface from the driver of a device. This makes it (...) impossible, to provide network transparent access to image acquisition devices (which is useful if you have a LAN full of machines, but scanners connected to only one or two machines). In contrast, (...) SANE has no difficulty supporting command-line driven interfaces or network-transparent scanning.

Bluntly put: With SANE you can connect your scanner to your ReadyNAS and scan from every workstation you like - as long as there's a SANE frontend available for your client's operating system.
  • Requirements: RAIDiator 4.1.5+
  • Platform: Sparc
  • Current Version: SaneBackends_1.0.21-readynas-0.2.2.bin
    Changes from previous release:
    - New backends: kodak (Kodak i18xx), kvs1025 (Panasonic KV-S10xx), p5 (Primax PagePartner)
    - 224 more scanner models supported.
    - Many backends updated.
    - Improved saned network daemon.
    - Internal SCSI, USB, threading, TCP & UDP code updates.
    - New sanei_magic image processing library.
  • Details:
    • This addon adds the SANE backend drivers for many scanners to your ReadyNAS
    • Of course, only USB scanners are supported ;)
    • To make use of a scanner attached to your ReadyNAS, you need a SANE frontend
    • A good frontend would be XSane, which is available for Linux and Windows
    • Drivers included:

  • A little XSane tutorial
Let's say your ReadyNAS has the IP address 192.168.10.123 and there's a supported scanner attached it. To make XSane (Windows and Linux version) see your scanner, all you have to do is to edit the file net.conf. Under Windows, this file will be located in the directory sane/etc/sane.d/ below the folder where you unzipped the XSane-Win archive. On Linux, this file normally is located in /etc/sane.d/. All you have to do is to add a single line, containing the IP address of your SANE-enabled ReadyNAS - so in this case this would be 192.168.10.123. Afterwards, you can do stuff like this:

    XSane scanning for available devices:

XSane actually found the scanner attached to my ReadyNAS DUO:

So let's do a preview of what's on the scanner right now:

Ok, we just want the CD cover, not everything:

    Scan in progress, receiving data:

Ok, I had to reduce that image a bit so it'll somehow fit in here (Original size of that screenshot is 1920x1080):
