Raid Rebuild is slow!

Postby MCCS » Fri Mar 30, 2012 4:19 pm

dear all
i have had my readynas 3200 with 6x 1tb and 6x 2tb.. so how i notice when its more then 50% full all the new data will only be written on the 6 disks. dropping performance to 40 to 70MB/s not good.
so now i take one 1tb drive out. and place a 2tb drive in. and quess what!

all my vm's cannot perform on the readynas anymore a reboot of a vm normally 2 mins takes more then an hour!! aka the rebuild is taking too much.. so even if you have dual redundancy.. if one disk breaks you will have stil noting all your systems will freeze when you rebuild.. and this will go on for 5 hours!!!

netgear please fix and or show some guidance were you can tweak the raid priority!!

I understand your concern with regards to using the system while the volume is rebuilding, however there is another perspective to consider. That being, getting the RAID volume back to a redundant state as fast as possible. A degraded RAID volume is a vulnerable RAID volume(the last thing we'd want is another disk failure resulting in data loss while we were trying to re-build from the previous failure). Back to this being a matter of dual redundancy and only 1 disk being rebuilt, I see where you're coming from. I'll pass this along as a suggestion.
