[T40] probably kernel panic - bridge module

For those who cannot wait for the official x86 releases, we'll occasionally post test releases here. This includes the Pro/NVX/Ultra/2100/3100/3200/4200 models.

[T40] probably kernel panic - bridge module

Postby ailas » Mon Mar 19, 2012 9:15 am

Model: ReadyNAS Ultra 2.
Steps: donwload kernel 2.6.37.6, netgearize, make all, menuconfig and choose module below, make modules, install to /lib, modprobe bridge

Code: Select all
    [*] Networking support —>
        Networking options —>
            <M> 802.1d Ethernet Bridging

After modprobe bridge system stop responding. Probably kernel panic.
- System is dead by modprobe and doesn't react on double-push power button (which normally shutdown ReadyNAS Ultra 2).
- My delayed scripts to collect data in background are not executed.
- Nothing in logs (system, kernel, frontview, whole /var/log/...), tried "Download all logs" also. Just #restart mark after.

Can't test [T42], http://www.readynas.com/download/GPL/kernel-build-tools-x86-4.2.20-T42.tar.gz gives me NOT FOUND.

ilkevinli alias wasn't referring to the firmware image itself but rather the kernel build tools to use with it.

I can't help much with compling GPL code. :(

I could debug it myself, if i could flash my kernel into NAS with netconsole support.

Why didn't you just ask chirpa-san ;)

Just posted 4.2.21-T7 beta, including the kernel sources.

Because I didn't get response on PM about NAT modules compiling which fails. I need VNP & NAT which is still not working so I'm going to sell my unit and build own. But I will try T7 with netconsole support before and send you logs if kernel panic happens.

I have over 500 unread PM's, sorry if one of those is you. I try to sort through them, but I don't get much time to hit the forums these days.

Now I tried the same again, as noted in my first post in this thread, with stable RAIDiator 4.2.21. Kernel 2.6.37.6.RNx86_64.2.4 #1 SMP on my ReadyNAS Ultra 2.

Download GPL, netgearized, make all... etc, to get same kernel as running in RAIDiator 4.2.21.
Now I still can compile USB sound modules as I desribed here - viewtopic.php?f=35&t=61970 modprobe, playing mp3 no problem here as before.

I even can compile bridge module as I described in first post in this thread. But the result is still the same.
KERNEL PANIC after modprobe.
And still CAN'T compile netconsole module to debug it across network.
Code: Select all
ERROR: "netpoll_send_udp" [drivers/net/netconsole.ko] undefined!
ERROR: "__netpoll_cleanup" [drivers/net/netconsole.ko] undefined!
ERROR: "netpoll_setup" [drivers/net/netconsole.ko] undefined!
ERROR: "netpoll_parse_options" [drivers/net/netconsole.ko] undefined!
ERROR: "netpoll_cleanup" [drivers/net/netconsole.ko] undefined!

Again, nothing in logs like before. (so it must be kernel panic). In all (system/kernel/etc) logs it looks like
Code: Select all
Jul  5 11:15:43 nas kernel: usbcore: registered new interface driver snd-usb-audio
Jul  5 11:38:56 nas syslogd 1.4.1#18: restart.

I modprobed usb sound and then compiled and modprobed bridge - panic. Restart in 11:38 is hard power reset.

Please, could you fix that? Kernel panic by bridge module, make netconsole module compilable or both.

"Netfilter connection tracking support" - NF_CONNTRACK can't be compiled as module too. So also support for fwknop (Single Packet Authorization and Port Knocking) is impossible.
