4.2.16T14 : Problem on 3200 with 3TB Hard Drive

Postby d-raven » Tue Dec 28, 2010 1:48 am

I just bought a ReadyNAS 3200. I upgraded OS to 4.2.16T14 and decided to replace all drive by Hitachi 3TB.
When I boot NAS , only first 4 drives are correctly recognized :

Hitachi HDS723030ALA640 2794 Go

But other drives are not correctly recognized :

Hitachi HDS723030ALA640 2047 Go

IMHO , I need to upgrade LSI MPT SAS firmware , original firmware is very old : 2007 , and I think that is not able to
recognized hard driver higher than 2TB.

How upgrade this firmware ... or if someone know how to fix this problem , I will be happy to know the solution.

Best Regards

David

that could very well be the issue since the readynas 3200 utilizes the lsi sas controller for the last 8 channels.
lets see what the jedis have to say about this :)

After some research , I found that onboard controller is : LSI 1068e. Someone on other forum asked a question about >2TB hard drive support to LSI , and the answer is :

If it is an LSI channel card, we do not support 3TB drives. However, it is possible it’s an OEM version, in which case you would have to check with the respective OEM

So , if we want upgrade LSI firmware , netgear have to make this before.

This is interesting. Anyway I don't think any enterprise 3TB disks are available yet. So at this stage the addition of 3TB support is really only a useful addition for the desktop ReadyNAS models not the rackmount ones. Of course this will change once enterprise 3TB drives come out, so it would be nice to see if there is a resolution for the problem on the 3200. Hopefully a Jedi looks at this thread, but remember they're probably on holidays atm.

The 4.2.16 release should have support for 3TB drives from a size aspect once the release goes final. There will however be no official qualified 3TB drives for the 3200 or any rack mount system until there are Enterprise class drives available. I am not working with the 3TB drives yet but send your logs to me and I will get them to the person who is. I am also interested in what errors are being reported.
