TeamSpeak 3 for the x86 platform (ReadyNAS Pro/NVX)

Postby markg » Mon Aug 16, 2010 4:02 am

TeamSpeak is flexible, powerful, scalable software which enables people to speak with one another over the Internet.
TeamSpeak is FREE of charge for non-commercial use. you can have up to 512 users!

all the admin tools are built into the client, and you can administrate via the client or telnet in to control all aspects of the server.

the ReadyNAS x86 (Pro and NVX) is a perfect platform for this application; it is a low overhead program, that needs to be always on for people to connect/talk to each other whenever they wish.

the only alternatives are to pay for remote hosting (expensive), or to keep yet another computer on 24/7 to host this (also expensive/not green).

any chance someone could do a add-on for this?

thanks,

mark

From a gaming world perspective Teamspeak is nice - though Ventrilo and XFire are used also. It's certainly not justified from a business perspective.

teamspeak and ventrilo are the two standards for gaming, from a feature standpoint. skype/gtalk etc. just dont have most of the features these two have.

ventrilo has an issue because only the 8 seat version is free, where teamspeak is free up to 512 users (for non profits like gamers), so ventrilo isnt really practical either, unless you want to pay an external hosting site for it.

but why pay for anything when you have a perfectly good ReadyNAS sitting around, powered up, with little to do most of the day? these are perfect applications to run in the background, as they take little cpu power.

i also understand there are quite a few non profits who use teamspeak for their intercompany communications, worldwide.

in any event, i used to run a ventrilo server (since the old version of teamspeak was pretty bad imo) but now that teamspeak 3 is out, we moved to that; and it is SO much better than anything else i have used. The only trouble i have now is that it has to run on (yet another) computer that is powered up 24/7, and im just tired of paying the electric bill.

looks like you are back from vacation!!

request;
we need a method to start/stop the server whenever desired.
we also need to be able to access whatever directory the files are in.
these are both used to upgrade the software (and to backup the database file); all you do after install is copy the new files over the old; the database portion is automatically updated.

also note; there is a server admin query password/login combo that is only shown once on the start up screen the FIRST time you launch without a database in place.
i suspect it is a pain to get to that in the readynas, so an easy work around would be to install the teamspeak software on a local computer, fire it up, record the password/login, shut it down, and then copy the database over to the readynas.
then you can turn it on there, already knowing the password etc. and not ever needing any direct access to the console again (all the other changes are done via the client, with a few done via telnet into a particular port). the only thing im not sure of is if you can move databases from windows to linux, but i dont see why they would change the data structure.

thanks again for considering doing this.
