NV+ Syncs, Shuts Off

Postby dsailor » Sun Jul 25, 2010 2:51 pm

I had my NV+ turned off for about a week or so. When I turned it on, I got a "RAID event detected" email, which said "RAID sync started on volume C:" -- when I looked into Frontview I could see the sync progressing. It went to 100% and I received an email suggesting that the sync had completed successfully and the drive was now fully redundant again.

I was once again able to use the volume, which contains a lot of media and also a lot of Time Machine backups (note: the volume is *very* full 95%). Then the whole box suddenly shut off entirely without any warning. No power, no lights, nothing.

I went through this cycle (power-up, sync, sudden shutdown) twice. Am afraid of turning it back on thinking the same is likely to happen again. Any suggestions for what to do? I have the log files which I downloaded before the second lights out crash happened.

P.S. All 4 drives are Seagate ST3320620AS (300GB) and has been running for years

Perhaps it's a PSU failure? Have you noticed a burning smell at all?

Unless your power in your house is flakey or you have an overloaded power circuit, that would be my guess.

You cannot use a normal PSU: http://www.readynas.com/forum/faq.php#Can_I_use_standard_ATX_power_supply_unit_to_power_the_ReadyNAS%3F.

Here's a quote from chirpa regarding the warranty for the NV+.

If your serial number falls in a given range you may be able to get a free replacement power supply depending what region you are in even if your NAS is out of warranty (not sure how long NetGear will continue to offer this):

Service Action to Prevent PSU Failures in ReadyNAS NV/NV+
yoh-dah wrote:Service Action to Prevent Premature Power Supply Failures in ReadyNAS NV/NV+

A small percentage of ReadyNAS NV (revision B) and NV+ owners with low-noise fanless power supply unit (PSU) may encounter a premature failure of the PSU due to elevated temperature. The ReadyNAS systems affected have Serial numbers between 000DA2010FFE and 000DA2016000. If you are unsure if your serial number falls within the hexadecimal range, you can use a hex calculator. (Click hex and overwrite the '0' with your serial number and click dec. If the number falls in the range of 58552553470 and 58552573952, then you should proceed with this service action.) Owners of ReadyNAS NV revision A who have replaced their original fan with the newer fanless PSU could be affected as well.

Thanks, I was mainly copying a previous post I made.

I presume that it's pretty like to the PSU then.

It would be good to hear how you get on. If the PSU is not replaced in your region there is a replacement PSU you can purchase, the RND4PSU1.

Not much luck with customer support because they claim my serial number is not recognized -- had to email picture in (blogged about it today here http://continuations.com/post/870987595/customer-support-is-the-new-marketing-or-not) -- may just go ahead and buy this from PC Connection. Many thanks for listing the parts number -- much appreciated.

Could you check these options are checked under "Alert->Settings" Tab?

--
Power-off ReadyNAS when a disk fails or no longer responds. (bY default, this should uncheck).
Power-off ReadyNAS when disk temperature exceeds safe levels. (by default, this should be checked)

I have decided to go ahead and order the replacement PSU. Once that is in, I will restart and check those settings. Thanks.

You don't need to go buy one. Your serial is in range, for RMA even out of warranty. Contact support again, if they don't do an RMA, ask for a tech lead/manager.

What is your case number (I couldn't find one via your forum email address)? I will add a note to make it clear to support that this should be authorized.

Thanks for offering. I had already gone ahead and bought it. Installed the new PSU last night and everything runs like a charm. Much appreciate everyone's responses here on the forum. In case anyone else runs across this, here are a bunch of helpful links (some already mentioned above)

Part on PC Connection (currently $113)

While everything is open you are supposed to re-reverse the fan (if you had previously reversed it)
