Disk format Case #: 19010261

Postby jwstephens1 » Wed Jul 25, 2012 1:23 am

I have an NV+ readynas that isn't making it out of boot.

I wonder as one possiblity if the data is formatted such that I can mount the disks on a regular standalone linux system and recover the data. Is the file system something that will allow me to have access with linux?

I don't have any way to figure this out, since the drives are all good according to the smart diagnostics. Readynas should hve no problem reading them, but isn't making it thru the "quota" message on the boot lcd.

Never does anything but ping, no raidar access.

I'd like to mount and copy the data before I figure out what the problem is with the NV hardware. Data is more important than the nv hardware obviously.

I hope it isn't some horrible proprietary thing, but who knows. I haven't tried to attack this yet, still studying my options.

thanks for any replies.

I have another question already open with netgear this is a separate topic and thread.

In my view it'd be best to contact tech support (http://www.readynas.com/support) at my.netgear.com and work with them on this issue. Edit the thread title (i.e. subject of first post in the thread) to include your case number.

However if you really want to if you have a v1 (silver chassis - Sparc) you can take a look at Mounting Sparc-based ReadyNAS Drives in x86-based Linux

Instructions for the new NV+ v2 (charcoal chassis - ARM) are different.

NB: A ReadyNas is not an excuse not to have a backup. Fire, theft, multiple disk failures, other hardware failure, floods, user negligence etc. can all result in loss of data.

I did use a controller and mount the 4 drives on an Ubuntu system. The ubuntu built fuse ext2 support and lvm support just worked w/o having to do anything but get necessary packages installed.
