ReadyNAS DUO XRAID Expand [Problem]

Postby jayeyy » Sat May 28, 2011 2:38 pm

Hello, ive had a readynas duo for a while now, it as 2 x 2TB hd's, today i tried to update it to 2 x 3TB's, So i pulled out one drive, put in a 3TB.. waited a while and nothing was happening..I read around and found out the DUO wont or never will support 3TB drives, So i pulled the 3TB out, Put back in the original 2TB (which was setup in redundancy btw.), And now ever since this morning, in the Radiator config pages under "volume" it's saying its only running on 1 drive, and if it fails all data is lost... In the box below that it shows both hard drives, 1 has the green light, and the other is flashing yellow... Does this mean that its resyncing? Or does anyone know whats going on?

Thanks.

I'm no expert but...
If you look under Status>Logs do you see anything more informative there?

Click on the Status tab and then on Health. What is the status on the far right for the drive that was never removed, and the drive that you tried to replace with the 3TB and have now returned to the Duo.

Thanks.

On Status -> Health, its saying the first drive is "OK" since i can still access my data. But the other drive i put back in, its saying "DEAD".

This drive cant be dead, Its brand new.. Maybe i need to format it and then let the DUO rebuild the array onto the formatted disc?

On the logs, Its saying the disc on channel 2 could not be used due to one of the following reasons: Background Sync in progress, Faulty Drive, Disc too small

Thanks alot guys.. Hope to hear from you soon as important data is at risk.

Thanks

I thought the duo could not utilize 3tb drives....I will need to re-verify this...

Stretchjr - no sparc based unit has the capability to utilize 3TB drives.

Jayeyy - it is shown as dead, because when it was hot removed, the system marked it as dead. Then when you attempted to add another drive, which failed, it thinks the dead drive was put back in.

First - if you do not have a current and complet backup, this might be the time to consider doing it. Then attach the 2TB drive that is considered dead to you PC via an SATA port and using disk management, simply delete the partitions. Then try to hot add it again.

As for the 3TB drives, hopefully you can return them. If your PC is new enough to support them, you might consider using at least one for a backup target. Or, if your budget can support it, you might want to consider the Ultra 2 which from Amazon is $280. You can use it as the primary with the 3TB drives and the Duo with 2TB drives as at least a partial backup.

@PapaBear

First, thanks so much for the reply.

I actually purchased a ReadyNAS Pro 6Bay (6 x Hitachi 3TB drive's.), But all my data is still on my Duo.

Whats the best way to copy all the contents from the DUO to the ReadyNas PRO ensuring everything was written ok?

I just plugged the dead drive into a USB to Sata adatper, and the computer didnt recognise it, Ill try it again now in a internal port.

I would simply use copy/past in Windows Explorer (or Computer) to copy the data over. Technically, you could set up a backup job on the Duo to copy over to the Pro, but it may take a while. When doing large jobs like this, I like to do it manually and take the data in small chunks by selecting folders to copy over. I start with the most critical data first. Once the copy is completed, you can then access the share/folder on the Pro and verify the data is complete.

When all the data is copied over, you can verify the data is correct by setting up a rsync backup job on the Duo with the Pro as a target. The job will take a long time the first time as it verifies each and every block. When you get the data copied and verified, I would assume that the Pro will become the primary. You can then put the 2TB drive back in the Duo and simply do a factory default. This will clean the drives and reinitialize them. The Duo can then be used as a partial backup for the critical data (photos, family records, etc). I have this data in a share named "finance" which accounts for about 2GB out of the total 1.5TB of data. The first backup from the Pro6 to the Duo should be set up as a NFS type and then change to rsysnc.

The only real reason I suggest copy/paste in this situation is that by doing it by share/folder selection, you can copy in smaller chunks and it is easier on the one remaining drive. Leave the videos/music ripped from DVD's/CD's that you still have for last. After all, if you encounter a problem in that area, then the worst situation would be that you have to rip it again.

Thanks alot, Im copying over my important data now (around 37gb), Im backing it up to a sub directory named "DuoBackup" inside the "backup" share on my Pro.. This is fine right? Then when i setup the rsync backup, Ill set the target to this exact location?

Im working off wifi here, So im only getting 5mb/ps still not going to take too long, I really have to get ethernet network setup in my office.

That should work. If you have any problems with the backup just open a topic under the heading Backup/Frontview and then PM me.

Yes a factory reset will wipe both disks. You might wish to do a System > Config Backup (keep zip file) that you can restore after the factory reset.

Yea ill do that, Thanks.

Also, ive just connected both NAS devices to my main computer (it as 2x gigbit ethernet) im accessing both devices fine, and whilst copying over the rest of the data, why am i only getting around 23mbps transfer rates? (Remeber im not on wireless not, connected both nas devices to gigbit ethernet.) under the connection in windows ethernet adapter its showing 1.0GBPS.

Any ideas?

23 MByte/s or 23 Mbit/s. If 23 MB/s that sounds reasonable. Take a look at ReadyNAS Performance Expectations. The Duo cannot saturate a gigabit connection and would be the bottleneck.
